I've taken a couple of the best brands of Sam-e (Nutralife and Nature Made) at therapeutic doses, but to no effect.

I get a moderate to strong improvement in my moods and sleep patterns with 5-HTP, and a mild to moderate improvement with SJW, but with Sam-e I just get nothing, nothing and more of nothing... might as well be a sugar pill. Is there anyone here who feels this stuff has been of great benefit to them?

P.S. sometimes I wonder about the enteric coating on some of these brands, and whether it dissolves the way it should. Have thought about breaking up the tablets & dissolving them in a large glass of water to see if that has some effect, but haven't tried it yet.

Well I couldn't resist my own suggestion... I crushed a couple Nutralife tablets, dissolved in water & drank. The stuff tastes horrible, kind of like lemon juice with some volcanic ash thrown in (nothing I'd serve at parties ;-).

I did finally feel it this time tho, an immediate "refreshing" lift. Kind of like how it feels after drinking a tall glass of iced tea on a hot summer day.

I can see how this stuff wouldn't be good for people with anxious depressions. I used to get those in the late 80's, but these days I get deadly dull, numb, emotionless/empty depressions which could probably benefit from Sam-e. The stuff is definitely a stimulant tho, now I can't get to sleep :-p.

To sum up, I think maybe the Nutralife brand Sam-e doesn't dissolve properly or completely, one of the two... the coating is probably too thick or the wrong consistency. Someone recommended the Jarrow brand, might try it.

Now to try & get some sleep... I feel like I had a couple espressos.

P.S... if anyone else wants to try this, I'd recommend (A) bracing yourself for a horrible taste, at least as bad as chewing aspirin, and (B) do it on a totally empty stomach, so the dissolved Sam-e gets absorbed immediately.

Really late reply, but I'm guessing others may come across these like I did, too.
You didn't mention the dosage, but 1200-1600 are the suggested ones. If it wasn't that much, I'd first try simply increasing it.
Re: the enteric coating. "Without this coating," says Dr. Richard Brown of Columbia University, "SAMe won't get released at the right place in the intestines for best absorption." The coating also protects them against air, prolonging shelf life. So if you do crush it, consume it immediately.
Also, make sure you're taking B-6 and/or B-12, and Folic Acid; SAM-e breaks down into harmful homocysteine. B-6 along with Folic Acid converts the homocysteine to cysteine and glutathione, and B-12 and Folic Acid convert it to methionine.
Hopefully this is able to be done appropriately and quickly enough when you take it crushed up. Don't know about that.
