Hey everyone. I'm new here. I'm 16 years old and am about to be put on a prescription anti-depressant. Believe me, that's my last resort, basically because they're supposed to slow down your metabolism and cause weight gain, which I don't want neither of. Anyways, I have anxiety/panic/paranoia/depression/mania/anxiety, ya know I'm pretty messed up. Anyways, I've read about 5-HTP and SJW. But, I've heard SJW is like bad and can kill you (Is that even true?) Anyways, which is better? 5-HTP or SJW? I really need to recover from this depression, and do not want stupid medications and being a anti-depressant dependent the rest of my life. I just want to get better because these emntal issues are effecting everything - especially school grades. Anyways, I'll appreciate anyone's help. (BTW, What is SAM-e and how do Omega 3 Fatty Acids help?)

Welcome to the forum! To answer your first question, no SJW isn't bad and it's certainly not going to kill you -- I don't believe there is a single documented case of someone ever dying from St. John's Wort... although there are always extreme circumstances... maybe someone out there eats a whole crate of SJW capsules, goes under tanning lights for two hours and then in a gloomy daze gets hit by a bus. I suppose anything is possible. But SJW is perfectly safe and much safer, in my opinion, than the prescription meds that treat depression. All the research and the many people on this board who are taking it can testify to that.

As for which to choose, it's really up to you. I'd say there's much more research on St. John's Wort and many more people around the world are taking it than other natural antidepressants, so you might want to start with that. I share your sentiments on not wanting to take a prescription anti-depressant, that's one of the big reasons why I created this site in the first place.

Good luck - and if you have other questions or need some emotional support you're always welcome to come back and post your thoughts here.
