Hey everyone:

I was wondering, I take SJW and Kava Kava 200 mg each in one capsule. Is it possible to take too much of this? If so what could happen? Right now I normally take 2 capsules a day. Yesterday I took 3. Just wondering if anyone knew about taking too much?

Well if the concentration of Hypericin in the SJW is the almost ubiquitous 0.3% you would actually have to take 5 capsules a day to get the ususal amount of it into your system.

As for Kava, I don't know what the RDA or upper-bound for dosage is (Epyx is the chap for that!), in fact I've never taken Kava and it's now banned from sale in the UK (but I know that I could buy a jar for next to nothing when I return to Moscow!!).

Have you ever tried Valerian by the way?...this is also great for anxiety and for use as a sleep aid (tried it many times and it works wonderfully). You may want to consider it if your supplies of Kava run-out.

Usual recommendation for kava, based on the German Commission E monograph, is up to 240mg of kavalactones per day.

How's it going David:

I've never taken that Valerium. But now that you mention it there is no harm in trying it. How did you begin to take SJW or any other herbal medicines. Also why is KAVA banned from over the counter sale in the UK? I hope it never gets banned here in the states. I love that stuff. Anyway stay healthy and thanks for the reply.

Hi Germanator:

I’m not doing to badly at the moment, I’m currently on holiday back home in the UK and I’m feeling very relaxed and chilled out because of it. How are you faring at the moment??

I started taking SJW because I was basically realized that I had been depressed for a long time and it came to a head when I was finishing university. I chose the ‘herbal route’ because I have never liked going to see doctors and also that I had read the usual horror stories about SSRIs snd other such medicines which seem occasionally to saturate the media. So, I started taking SJW and had great success with it, unfortunately for some reason (except for the first time I took it) I never seem to stick with it continuously for a long time…I always seem to stop when I feel better and then crash again – something I vow to change as from two weeks ago (and something I would recommend you not to do)!!! Once I’d started taking SJW (and found this forum) I started researching how it worked, other alternative herbal remedies etc and here I am almost 300 posts later!

Kava was banned in the UK (and possibly in other European countries) because it was though to have adverse effects on the liver in a (significant I think) minority of people who took it. It is a good illustration of the lack of standardisation governing the ‘herbal world’ that it is banned in some places and still available in some!!…also, seeing that it is of course a natural product and has been used in it’s plant form for centuries by the people who live where it grows there is clearly a lot of work to be done before the powers-that-be get their act together and make things easier for those of us who find success with herbal remedies.

As I said, I’ve never actually taken Kava, but I do use Valerian regularly and have had fantastic results with it. The great thing about it is that it’s very gentle in it’s workings and I have never experienced any side effects whatsoever – in fact I don’t think that I’ve ever actually read about any existing.

Stay happy!
