Topic Title: SJW and Contac
| "SJW and Contac" , Thu 13 Mar 22:59
I'm taking the cold medicine Contac right now, and I just started taking SJW last Saturday...Contac can't be taken with MAO inhibitors, but I know there's been a lot of debate about SJW being one....so could someone tell me if this combination is safe? I've already taken them together, and I've felt really weird (Contac messes me up), and I was afraid it was worse when combined with the SJW....but I just want to know if this is safe or not. And if there was a reaction between them, does anyone know what the side effects that I would experience might be? I mean would my blood pressure rise dangerously, or what? please someone reply asap. Thanks

First things first: SJW is not a MAOI. There hasn't been "a lot of debate" about this recently, just a lot of confusion. Many years ago, it was observed that SJW exhibits weak MAOI effects in vitro, but the idea that SJW was a MAOI itself was soon discounted, especially once hyperforin was identified and studied.
MAOI medications can be problematic because of an interaction with tyramine, which is contained in red wine, cheese etc. The combination can send blood pressure skyrocketing. This is not a complaint you hear among SJW users ever.
As for Contac, it got its MAOI warning primarily because of a substance called PPA, which the FDA asked all manufacturers to stop using. This was only present in their "12-Hour Cold Capsules". Their other product lines were straight paracetamol/antihistamine combos, which don't generally earn a MAOI warning. Not that it matters with SJW anyway

No, the Contac I have is the newer version, with the ephedra or whatever taken out, and it still has the MAOI warning. I don't know what ingredient would cause the interaction, but it does have "pseudoephedrine." What is PPA? Thanks for the information though. I am relieved to hear that :)

PPA is phenylpropanolamine. It clears stuffy noses and is an appetite suppressant, but it was also associated with a small risk of haemorrhagic strokes in women.
The MAOI warning on recent Contac boxes might come from the antihistamine content. You would need to list the ingredients to be sure.

Well I have the 12-hour tablets, and the only active ingredient is 120 mg of psedoephedrine hydrochloride....weird because the normal 6-hr. tablets only have 30 mg of it...I think those #'s are correct...the main ingredient in that type is tylenol...I'm not sure about the inactive ingredients of what I'm taking, but it doesn't matter, I'm not worried about the combination anymore.
But....now I need to know if 5-htp and Contac is safe...hehe...I'm going to buy some of that...
