I've heard how good a tablespoon or so a day of flaxseed oil is for you, but I've been unable to find it. Is it sold like olive oil, and other vegetable oils, or is it only in capsules, like fish oil?? And, does someone have the Specific amount that is supposed to be good for you? Right now, I just grind up flaxseeds and sprinkle a tablespoon of them on my cereal. Any ideas?? Thanks!

You can find flaxseed oil in most health food and vitamin shops. It tends to be sold in either very large capsules or in liquid form, where you can mix it with yoghurt or anything else. Often vitamin stores keep it in the fridge. It's a good source of Omega-3 and I take it myself... but it's important not to heat or cook it as it loses its properties this way.

Thanks, Kelly. I've checked at the regular grocery store, and an upscale one(the one with the Good chocolate bars!), and turned up Nothing. The upscale one Did send me back to the health/vitamin refrigerator, but perhaps I didn't look closly enough----I did see the capsules. I'll check the vitamin shops tomorrow for the oil. I want to put it on lettuce salads, mix it in with the salad dressing. Have you tasted it, it's not unpleasant is it, like the fish oil?? Thanks!

If you're looking for the liquid form, look in the store's fridge for a black plastic bottle with a screw-top. Most of the ones I've seen are like that. I prefer taking the capsules but they're more expensive, so I just gulp a tablespoon straight from the bottle (I don't eat lettuce salads, but that's a good idea too). It tastes not bad, in fact you might even like it. On a salad it probably tastes pretty good. In yoghurt, my favorite. Definitely much better than any fish oil for taste, it's and it's very good for you.

Hey! I found it! Thanks, Kelly! Because of your description of the location of it in the store, and your description of the bottle, I was able to find it. Two shelves above! in the same refrigerated section where I buy my soy milk from. Right there all the time! What an Ugly! bottle, looks more like something I'd put in my car, somewhere under the hood! Ok, and the taste is not the greatest, not like those chocolate bars I will definately have to slip in in with something I'm eating, and hopefully not notice it. Thanks, Kelly!!

Flax oil is great as a salad oil. I've used it in "Good Seasons" dressing mix and I was really impressed with the nutty flavor.

130 calories per tablespoon!! And 14 grams of fat!! Ackkk!!! I just read the label. Any low fat versions of this stuff?? Had it on a salad today, mixed with a bit of my no fat low calorie dressing, and it was ok.

the grams of fat _are_ the omega-3s, as omega-3s are fatty acids. the key is that they are polyunsaturated and thus extremely physically flexible molecules. a chemist friend has a theory as to why omega-3s are so good--fats make up cell walls and the more flexible the cell walls are, the better they can communicate with each other and respond to stimuli. it follows that omega-3s allow a cell's wall to be more flexible and responsive. most interestingly and importantly, omega-3s glom (my word) onto any type of cell, possibly including cells in the synapse. she is a brilliant person, and this definitely shot my interest in nutrition forward a bit.
**please note that flaxseed is not a cure-all. i love it, true, but it is definitely a nutritionally important item and can facilitate but not instigate change towards a more healthy brain and body. can be a good part of a larger health regimen...
please forgive the weird sentences above....
