Topic Title: Switching brands and Alchohol
| | "Switching brands and Alchohol" , Tue 9 Apr 10:23
Hey All,
I have been on SJW for a little over five weeks, feel a little better, but not my normal self yet. About 10 days ago I switched from a generic Eckerds brand SJW to Enzymatic Therapy brand. Can switching off set the previous brand or if that previous brand was not as good? Any comments? Also, I like to have a glass of wine at night maybe two or three no more. Sometimes on the weekends I let my hair down, but nothing too bad. How does the SJW and Alchohol mix. I have heard differnet opions.
Thanks All,
Matt

I've found that I can't drink red wine anymore. Sob! Apart from that, no problems

I drink once or twice a week and have had no problems, although I drink beer not wine. Some reports will tell you that SJW has mild MAOI properties and oughtn't be mixed with things like red wine; however, I believe from what I have read elsewhere that this has been largely discredited. If you wanted to be on the safe side, perhaps you could switch to something else .. it's up to you really :)

I actually like to drink a couple of beers on Fri and maybe 5-6 on Sat. I used to drink way too much. Then I quit for a year. I started drinking a couple of beers here and there about 6 months ago. I think that the SJW has really helped me keep it (drinking) in a social and moderate context. I don't crave beer anymore like I used to. But it still tastes good enough to want one or two on the weekends. I did have one glass of red wine last weekend and woke up with a real bad headache. It may just be that wine gives you a worse hangover at any rate. I think you do get a little more tipsy when drinking and taking SJW. Lastly, I would say on the whole, I feel better the next day now that I take SJW. I think because drinking depletes serotonin (from what I have heard). Someone like us with anxiety (me) or depression probably already have some type of serotonin deficiency. Therefore, the condition is enhanced when hungover. I used to feel as if I were literally going to die when I was hungover before. Now I just feel like ****. But, with SJW, i rarely drink more than I should. So, it has not been that big of an issue.
Whew, sorry for the motormouth. Not sure any of this will help, but I hope it does. Good luck.

I read an article which suggested that early research shows alcoholic rats taking SJW to crave alcohol less. Frustratingly, I can't recall where the article was and have no idea how big a pinch of salt it was meant to be taken with...

Actually, I read that same study. There have actually been several studies which would suggest that SJW works very well with alcoholics, people trying to quit smoking, drugs, etc. I would guess the reason is that allot of the people do these things because of some type of anxiety. These things give them some release from stress or anxiety. SJW tempers stress and anxiety considerably for me. So, I would guess the same true with others. Just wish I would have known that when I stopped everything cold turkey.

Ah - I hadn't thought of that - that the reason it could help alcoholics was because it it lowered their anxiety and stopped them wanting to drink .. I was presuming it was some sort of physiological thing...
How long did it take before you noticed a significant effect on your anxiety?

About two weeks. I mean, I noticed a real difference around 3 weeks. I was a little worse for about a week and a half. Then around week two, things started to turn around. The got progressively better up to about week 5-6 and leveled off. I have switched brands which seemed to agravate my anxiety a little. Probably just because the new brand contained a little more of the active ingredients. Back to feeling pretty darn good now though.
Since it has calmed me down so much, I think it has tempered my metabolism (which was too fast). I used to be skinny as a rail. Had worked out for a long time as part of my plan to stay off the booz. But no matter how much I worked out, I never really got bigger. Now that I/SJW seem(s) to have slowed my metabolism a bit (kept the food/nutrients in my body longer like a normal person), I have been able to put on some nice muscle weight, without getting a gut or any unwanted weight. This does wonders for your self image which in turn helps out with anxiety, depression, and just your basic outlook on life.
I must say that I have benefited allot from SJW with regard to my anxiety. I never really thought about how much my anxiety hindered my life till I started being able to think with a mind clear of anxiety. It is certainly not the cure all (as I still have some anxiety now and then). But, it is so much better (IMO) than the prescription SSRI's as far as side effects go.
