Topic Title: Sundown Info Please

To all those who have taken Sundown, I have a couple of questions. I used to take Walgreens brand which reported .3 hypercin @ 300MG (1 pill). I wanted to try another brand so I picked up Sundown as I thought I had heard good things about it here. At any rate, on their bottle, it reads .3 hypercin (.9mg ). Each pill is 300MG, but there is no mention of the content in each pill. However, it prescribes taking two of these pills to achieve the .3 hypercin (it would seem). It does seem as if they pills are 300MG just as the Walgreen brand were. So, I am incredibly confused. This is the one thing I really don't like about herbal remedies. There is no real good standard.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me? This is the Sundown Standardized brand. I have been taking the 2 tablets as prescribed by the bottle. But, I certianly don't want to be taking more than I need. It just makes it harder to taper off when/if I do. Cheers everyone.

Hey Mike:
I don't actually take either of the brands you mention (being in the UK) but as far as the calculations and the dosage goes, if each tablet is 300mg Hypericum and the concentration of Hypericin is 0.3% (or as the bottle says 0.9mg [which equals 900 ug]), this is obviously a 'normal dose'....
I shouldn't worry at all about taking too much, in fact; the brand which I take is three a day dosage with each tablet providing 1mg/1000ug of Hypericin - which means that if you took 3 of your ones (which you possibly should), you would still get slightly less (about 10%) Hypericin than me.
I definately agree with you about the herbal remedies and standardisation issue!! - you should see the ridiculous stuff that gets printed on the side of some of the bottles I've seen in health food shops - crazy!!
Hope all's ok!

Hey David. Yeah, I think I will just stick with taking the two tablets three times a day. It has seemed to help my anxiety symptoms some. But, I have been in a grumpy mood the last two days. Not sure why that is. Maybe just one of those weeks that everyone has. Just seems that every thing which has not gone my way has really pissed me off the last two days. I have read of people having this occur when first starting SJW. Maybe it is because the dose is in fact a little higher. So my body is getting used to it kind of like when you first start. Whatever the case, things are pretty good. Thanks for asking. Yourself?

Hi again:
I misunderstood! - I didn't know that you were taking 2 tablets 3 times a day....if you do this it equals 5.4 grams per day of Hypericin which is a whopping dose - if you need to take two together, I would do it only twice a day which will provide a dose at the very upper end of the 'normal' scale!!
I know what you mean about bad weeks - I had one a couple of weeks ago where no-one could do anything right and I was a complete grump...thankfully it wore off though :). I'm also fine, cheers for asking! - I'm actually flying out of the UK on Saturday to go and live in Russia for a year, so I'm starting to get pretty nervous, but I'm feeling extremely positive about things!
See you!

Believe it or not, 6 tabs is actually the right dose in this case! Sundown states on their website that you get "0.9mg hypericin per 2 tablets". Given the concentration they claim, this suggests each tablet contains 150mg of extract, and therefore 450mcg hypericin.
This is pretty unusual granted, but it makes dosing very flexible. It would be tempting to start with 3 tabs/day and ramp up towards 6 over time, depending on when you felt them kicking in.

P.S. I notice that Sundown are now also selling a prescription German extract called ZE117, which happens to be the extract name for Remotiv. I mention this because I also read a study the other day in which 5 German extracts were tested for batch consistency and content ... Remotiv tested so badly that the researchers said it should be "specially labelled to indicate it contains virtually no hyperforin"!! I'll dig up the article and post the link soon ... it was a good read.

6 a day eh!? - that rather makes me wonder what exactly constitutes the other 150mg in each tablet!!! - binders and glazing agents don't weigh that much?!?!?

Thanks for both of your replies. I have been taking 2 in the morning, 1 at lunch, and two at dinner. I took two tabs all three meals yesterday and was fine. What you (Epyx) described is exactly what is on the label. I mean, it really confused me due to past experience and expectations. However, the one reason I could see them doing it in this fashion, is so that you can taper off much easier. Or just reduce your dose. My only guess. Imagine how much easier it would be if you could cut a dose in half, as opposed to just cutting it period. I cannot imagine why else they would make a normal dose TWO tabs three times a day. I hate swallowing that many pills. But I will say, they do seem to have more of an effect than my Walgreens brand SJW. (Walgreens is a pharmacy for those of you in the UK).
Good luck on the move Dave. I am sure that will be a great experience. Am glad to hear things are good. Cheers.
Mike
