Topic Title: St. Johns Wort Oil Wierdness

Ok, I bought this bulk fresh St. Johns Wort flowering tops, packed about 2 lbs of it into a 1/2 gallon mason jar, I mean I really packed the hell out of it, then poured olive oil on it till covered completely. Then I set the concoction on the window sill in the sun for 2 weeks. After about 8 days the lid popped and oil started to gush out from the pressure. So I opened the jar, let the pressure normalize and then stuck a new lid on. While working with the oil that day I noticed a psychotropic effect from the medicine, though I could scarce believe it since none of the literature talks about psychoactive activity from toppical application. Especially in such small doses.
The next day I started rubbing the oil on my chest 3x per day because I have asthma and was experiencing bad chest pains. This helps tremendously! I've been doing this for about 11 days now and here are the results: Within 5 minutes of rubbing on my chest about 2 tsp (or less) really a small capfull, I get a buzz about equivelent to drinking a light beer, but without the mental fog and with increased mental ability. Then it fades within 30 minutes and then I get a burst of energy after the semi lethergy wears off.
Round about the 4th day I experienced what I can only describe as a manic episode. I wasn't crazy or anything, I just felt like I drank about 10 cups of coffee, experienced 0 social inhibition, and 0 jitters. The next day the fatigue started. I still continue to be increasingly anti-depressed, yet fatigued. The terrible headaches have ended. I am guessing here: but the headaches that I was experiencing were strikingly similar to caffiene withdrawl headaches. I think that the SJW must have been normalizing my acetylcholine because I am a hopeless coffee addict.
Here's what happened to a woman I know: She went to the doctor the other day because her throat was swollen up really bad. The Doc said that she was seriously ill with a viral infection and that she should cease working and go home. She doesn't work! Anyway, the next day I rubbed her lower back vigorously with this St. Johns Wort Oil. 10 minute later she was in the bathroom sitting on the pot with terrible diarrhea. This **** stank worse than anything you ever smelled in your life. Words can't express how bad this smelled. If demons and foul spirits indeed exist and have a smell, this is what they probably smell like!
She then got a lot better, but now she is starting to get sick again. She only used the SJW oil just that once.
So, there you have it, my limited (11 days or so) experience with St. Johns Wort. I have yet to take the herb internally. That is to say, I haven't swallowed anything yet.

Fresh herbs should not be extracted in oil. They can undergo anaerobic fermentation and produce all kinds of poison, including botulism toxin. That bacterial fermentation is where the gas came from. There is no way to tell what is in the concoction, or what the long term side effects might be. Extract fresh herbs in alcohol (40% alcohol or greater prevents fermentation). Dried herbs can be extracted in oil.
