"waking up tired-please help" , Wed 21 Apr 11:03

I started taking 5htp for insomnia 5 days ago. I take 25grams a day in the evening and it seems to work. The only thing is now I can stay asleep for 6 hours which is AWESOME( used to get 3 or 4 of fragmented sleep) but I wake up feeling REALLY tired as though the sleep I got was too much REM sleep or something. I always wake up feeling tired by the way for the past two years...it just seems to have been exacerbated by the 5htp and you'd thinkI'd have more energy cause I've been sleeping more. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this experience?

Hi samanthalove
Its quite right what the post was saying below too about depressed people fretting and worrying during day etc.
I still do wake up a bit tired but not as bad as what I used to. When I wake up I have a glass of hot water and sqeezed lemon wait for kettle to cool down beforeadding water to lemon. This is great to help detoxify the liver also I know it is always said but do drink lots of water as mild dehydration can make you tired and when you wake in morning everyone has gone without wter all night while a sleep. Also I cut out wheat I stopped eating bread , pasta biscuits as I was extremely very very tired all day from the point I got up till I went to bed. I cannot describe the tired ness it was awfull. It really did help I do not eat bread wheat based cereals , you can eat cornflakes. I did notice a difference I did not feel so sluggish my brain fog disappered. I am by no means recommending doing it indefinately try it for a couple of weeks and slowly have the have the occasional wheat based thing try it as an experiement. I read an article on colonic irrigation and the colonic therapist said that the one thing that clogs people up is wheat. i was eating pasta bread sandwiches frequently
Its just a suggestion but it did help me. You may not eat as much wheat as what I did.

Hi Samantha, I don't take 5 htp but i have read that depression can cause extended periods of rem sleep so the good, deep sleep we all crave is less. It goes something like this, during our waking hours depressed people worry and stress a lot more than your average person. The body's way of dealing with unresolved worry and stress is to try and resolve it during sleep through dreams, thus extended periods of rem and less of restful sleep. We wake in the morning feeling tired and demotivated then the whole thing starts again. We are less able to cope with things due to being tired. I beleive that if i can break this cycle it will help my depression. Can i suggest, some form of relaxant to ease you through the day. I am awaiting a delivery of L-Theanine to help with this because it promotes alpha waves in the brain, which is what we get during restful, good sleep. I'll let everyone know how i get on. BTW, has anyone had experience of this L-Theanine.
