Does taking 5 htp make anyone BLOW UP about little things..just in an angry aggressive mode? I began taking 25 grams of 5htp a day to sleep better and it has been making me sleep better slowly, but it seems that I feel anxious and MAD throughout the day sometimes. I blow up about little stupid things and get VERY Agressive about it. Are these angry feelings temporary while my body gets adjusted to the 5htp or do you think its permanent?

Hi,
I was starting to wonder the same thing! 4 days ago, I started taking: Gotu Kola, fish oil, a multi-vitamin and "crave free" which contains 50mg 5HTP (I take 4 capsules so 200mg 5HTP), rhodiola, glutamine etc.....for the past two days, I've been really aggressive, so much so, that I got into an argument just this morning with a male driver, and had I not been a woman, we would have gotten into a fist fight, there was some name calling, and our cars did stop, but then, HE kept going, while I wanted to stay and fight!!!! I also find that my panic attacks, which were temporarily dormant, are now back with a vengence.
I think I'll stop the "Crave Free" to see if this aggression goes away.
Did you stop taking 5HTP? if so, do you feel better?

Thanks y2Valerie, I didn't know that about rhodiola!
I stopped taking the 5HTP/rhodiola combination and am feeling much better.

I don't know - I have the same thing sometimes, but I wonder if it's to do with the 5htp or something else.
Try taking a few days break from 5htp and use something else for sleep (valerian?) and see what happens with the anger.
25mg isn't very much 5-htp, but everyone's different, and also people vary in their opinions about how much is good to take. Experimentation is the answer I think.
5htp is definitely weird. It has different effects on me sometimes.

5htp can increase anxiety.

What would you recommmend for anxiety?
Right now, I'm taking a multi-vitamin, flax seed oil and Gotu Kola. I've been taking the Gotu Kola for 5 days, the GNC Fingerprinted, and I've got to say that my anxiety is pretty bad right now.

I like Kava Kava, Calcium & Magnesium. I've gotten pretty good at recognizing what causes me anxiety, when I can pin point the cause I can then talk myself out of the anxiety. Deep breathing helps. I've found that most of the time my anxiety is caused by me feeling like I have to fix a problem that I can do nothing about, cause it's not my problem to begin with! Does that make sense??

I just did a little reseach, and found an article on google that claims Kava Kava can promote seizures.

L-glutamine can cause irritability as although it is used to make GABA, it is first used as an excitory transmitter.
I've had good results using different combos, including l-taurine - but you have to be careful how much you take, or you end up feeling 'flat'.
L-glutamine is in opposition to l-taurine - supplement too much of one, and you end up deficient in the other.
I love my combo of inositol, gaba and niacinamide right now - really helps with anxiety.

Does this mean you no longer take 5-htp?

Hi-
nope - I DO still take 5-htp, although STILL fiddling around with dosage. I tried just going without 5-htp or tryptophan, but I felt like something was missing - I still felt slightly edgy and wasn't sleeping well, so I added 5-htp back in.
I am generally sleeping much better, but I have to say, last night I had an AWFUL night. However I had had a few social drinks earlier plus I had done the deed of drinking coffee (duh - how stupid can I get) because I had an English class to give in the evening.
It doesn't help that someone fairly close to me suddenly died the other day of a brain tumour that he knew nothing about before and I am still in shock.
If I can get through the next couple of weeks I should be ok.

I had a really bad night last night as well (I couldn't seem to digest my food) and today I have really bad anxiety. I don't think the Gotu is helping, I've been on it for a week and I seem to be getting worst instead of better.
I'm not sure about using Gaba or 5-HTP, I'm afraid they'll make me irritable (I'm irritable enough already!). I don't know what else to do.
I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I wish you all the best in overcoming this sad moment.

Gotu Kola is actually a naturally occurring caffeine. That's where your anxiety might be coming from. If you're jumpy or jittery and can't concentrate, that's it. I found this out years ago, completely by accident, by ingesting it in a natural soda. Did some research, and there it was....

Are you sure you're not confusing Gotu Kola with Kola Nut?
Do you suffer from anxiety? and if you do, what do you take?
Thanks.
