Can anyone tell me what exactly are the benefits of 5-hpt? I have noticed that a lot of people on this site are taking it, but I don't see anyone really praising it, so what exactly does it do, I really am interested.

Same thing as L-Tryptophan, increases levels of serotonin in the brain.
I've tried it, and don't much like it... there's a small potential risk of heart damage from long-term use as well (too much serotonin in the bloodstream rather than the brain), and I think that's turned some people off to it. The fallback from Tryptophan being pulled off shelves in the USA probably hasn't helped much either.

I was advised to take 5-htp by the assistant in a health shop, actually she advised it to me because I told her "I wanted to lose weight," Doesn't seem like it's actually for weight loss!!! In fairness she did recommend iron tablets because I feel tired all the time, and evening primrose oil I don't know what that's for but she said "every woman should take it." I can understand the iron tablets and evening primose but I am a bit confused about the 5-htp!!!

Steph, As a certified personal trainer I must say I NEVER heard of using 5HTP for weight loss. I would seriously research that one if that's your goal.
5HTP, a subset of the amino acid L-tryptophan, is used because the straight amino acid is via Rx only. According to articles it is a mood lifter. There is plenty of info. on the web.
