GNC have gone out of their way to confuse their customers with stupid names like "Concentrated" and "Fingerprinted". The "Concentrated" product is just a dry herb capsule, so your not getting the stuff that was used in all the successful clinical trials.
In theory, each 1000mg of dry herb should contain about 0.5mg, so 2 of them will get you to the dose you requested. To get to the clinical dosage (2.7mg hypericin), you would need about 6 of them.
If you find you don't get much result from them, consider switching to GNC's "Standardized" product. That's a better choice.

thank you Epxy, I was lured by 1000mg because I wanted to take one pill per day, now I learned that I have to take 6!!! I'm going to take 3 per day and finish this bottle after I'll go for standarized one.

Anytime Ymuymu!
I actually made the same mistake when i first tried SJW. I bought a "3600mg" capsule, but this turned out to be just dried herb and not extract. Extract gives better results generally.

GNC stuff is really unhelpful - I have 180 x 500 mg 'fingerprinted' SJW, which is described as St John's Wort Herb Powder. Does this mean I'd have to take 12 a day to get to the recommended dose?! Any suggestions for a better brand?

SJW Powder is virtually worthless in therapeutic terms. Your calculation is correct (12/day), but that's only basing it on dry herb equivalent. All clinical trials use standardised extract and that's what we should use too.
GNC make a Standardized line if you want to try that, otherwise any standardized SJW extract should be a good start. Even better, try to find an extract that standardises on hyperforin (4-5% is the expected level).
I'm not sure what part of the world you are in, so I can't be specific about brands yet.

"Ze117" refers to a type of "extract" made by Max Zeller AG (Switzerland). I say "extract" in quotes because, to the best of my knowledge, Ze117 is minimally processed i.e. it's just dried and puvlerized. I've got a German research paper (2000) which shows that Ze117 contains absolutely no hyperforin, and I'm noticing in other lab papers that Ze117 is considered hyperforin-free by researchers (which makes it an interesting control substance).
This should be considered a bad thing. Hyperforin is believed to mediate most of the anti-depressant effect of SJW. That GNC put their Ze117 product into their "Fingerprinted" range is another bad sign (in GNC terms, this means it's not a solvent-based extract; instead it's just crushed whole herb).
GNC's Standardized line would be better, but you should really look at least for any product that standardizes on hyperforin (4-5%). If it's affordable to you, Perika (from Nature's Way) and Movana are the best of the hyperforin-standardised SJWs.
Hope this is not too confusing.

... "Remotiv (Ze 117)is interesting, as it has been shown to be effective, yet it contains a very low level of hyperforin. Furthermore, it is one of the few hypericum extracts which has been compared to SSRI antidepressant medication. Not only was this low-hyperforin extract as effective as the SSRI in treating depression, it was also effective in reducing anxiety and agitation and the patients reported fewer side effects. The authors concluded that hypericum and fluoxetine were equipotent with respect to all main parameters used to investigate antidepressants. Although hypericum may be superior in improving the responder rate, the main difference between the two treatments is safety. Hypericum was superior to fluoxetine in overall incidence of side-effects, number of patients with side-effects and the type of side-effect reported." ...

Many thanks for your quick reply. And no thanks to GNC - they must think their customers are idiots who couldn't cope with real information or something. Anyway, I think I will now boycott them and look for someone else's standardized extract, as you suggest. I'm in the North East (Putnam County, near NYC).

See my reply to Ryatsmith in this thread.
You're right, I think GNC do their customers a disservice with their confusing product names.

Wow - many thanks. It's great to have such an authoritative source of information. Bless you and the internet - otherwise I'd still be standing in the aisles at GNC, peering at the bottles and completely puzzled.
