"HTP DANGER!" , Mon 5 May 05:20

Ive posted something similar to this before but ill just repost it.
I started taking 5-htp about 2 years ago and using 50mg
Then one night before bed I decided to take 2 50mg tablets.
Then I had really really horrible nightmares that lasted a long time.
One of which that doesnt sound bad but was horrible was where I was with a friend and I ate 2 orange sweets (I believe these to be the 2 HTP tablets) and they got all gooey in my mouth and I was trying to pick all the goo out but the more I picked out out it just kept coming. It felt like 2-3hours of trying to pick this goo out that kept coming back, it was horrible and tiring.
I didnt think much of the organge sweet thing but I now realise it was a warning about HTP (I am into spirituality/dreams etc).
I then took 100 mg again during the day and the most horrible thing happened that I have ever had off medicines like this.
About every 3-4 minuites I would get this absolutly horrible 15-20 second feeling in my head. Like my head was expanding horribly or something it hard to describle but it was horrible. It was so horrible I was scared out my mind that I was going to have to go to hospital. In fact the pain of this expanding thing that kept kappening evey 3-4 minuites was so horrible that if it had been constant and not just little bursts every 5 mins then I cant describe how bad it would of been. On a par with a horrific LSD/Mushroom trip or giving bith to a baby that last 4-5 hours and not 2-3 mins! Im not kidding! I cant believe so much pain could come from something like this.
I know it doesnt sound bad when I say it was like my head expanding but its hard to describe. You know that funny/horrible awkward feeling you get if you take too much HTP well it was like that but 100 times worse. Very very frigtning.
I was soo soo lucky it was quick pulses of pain.
Well I wondered what the hell this was and why no one else had had this happen and why HTP want banned.
Well I read on the net that HTP can be dangerous as it can dissovle to easily in your small intestine or something causing serotonin to flood your blood stream which is very dangerous.Serotnoin is meant to be made in the brain and should not be present in blood. It is not supposded to be in your bloodstream. Meybe this is what happened to me, im not sure.
Now heres is the really scary part.
If 50mg was ok for me, 100mg was horrific almost to the point of thinking about killing myself if it got worse, what would of happened if I took 200mg or 300mg? Could I be dead or of had that horrible thing been worse? For the last time this was so bad I was TERRIFIED out my mind the pulses of pain were so bad. I dread to think of what a higher dose might of done.
Should I write off to someone?
I was on SJW as well but no other SSRI.
Anyway watch out people, If I were you I would take tryptophan capsules on an empty stomach. It is much more natural.
It just shows you. You take something like HTP thinking its ok but it might not be. Better to stop taking HTP people and use tryptophan.
Dont foget not to eat protien with it. Trytophan must be taken on a completly empty stomach or with sugar to clear out the protien molecules.
Another thing that common to most people is an uncomfotable feeling when you take larger doses of HTP.Even when I took lower doses of HTP I noticed a slight uncomfotableness so I took 20-30mg untill I barly notcied. But then I realised that I would be sligtly uncomfortable all the time, maybe so little I didnt notice. The point is youe people might take HTP to feel better but you are 10% more edgy/uncomfortable when you do. If you take tryptophan this doesnt happen. So you see even if HTP doesnt make you ill you could be spending your life 10% more uncomforable than normal and not even know!
DONT TAKE HTP! USE TRYPOTPHAN!

Wait a minute, one person's bad experience does not constitute significant reason to suggest that it isn't right for anyone. Many people respond extremely well to 5htp, and it improves their lives to no end. You may have taken a bad batch of 5htp or the company could have added something to which you were allergic. I'm not meaning to discount what a horrible experience this was for you, but warning everyone that they shouldn't take 5htp is uncalled for.

Secondarily, I believe you've gotten your facts mixed up a bit. 5-htp has never been banned from the US market. Tryptophan however, was banned for a number of years, because of a bad batch made up in Japan which caused horrible reactions in many people. The FDA has since re-allowed it into the market, and indeed it may be a very good option for treatment of depression, since some people respond better than to tryptophan than to 5htp. However, in many people 5htp allows for more production of serotonin in the brain because it can more easily pass through the blood brain barrier than can tryptophan.

The difference in the two is that 5htp is one step further in the process of becoming serotonin, and it may be that transforming tryptophan into 5htp is what some people's bodies are not good at doing. Anyway, my basic point is that what is great for some people doesn't work as well for others, and it is better to supply information than to pass judgement about what wil or will not work for someone.
Thanks

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Just goes to show that everyone is different and reacts differently to certain medications. I had the best experience on 5htp, it cured my depression, and I always recommend it. However everyone needs to do their own research and find out what works best for themselves

The last time I tried 5-htp my blood pressure went up some, but it could have been something else, so I'm trying it again. I'm using a different blood pressure medicine this time, ace inhibitor-Lisinopril, and so far after 4 days no increase in BP. You never know when you are mixing different medications what will occur. Many people use 5-htp with success. I hope I'm going to be one of them. Depression can be very bad and I certainly believe that 5-htp is worth a try. With any new treatment a person should start with a low dose and build up to an effective dose. This will minimize any bad side effects, if any. I've read enough about 5-htp to believe that it's safe and effective for most people.
