Topic Title: 5htp side effects

Hi...I am kind of new to this, and I have a few questions. I took Prozac for 8 years..and I have been of for 5 weeks, w/awful withdrawals. I recently started taking 5htp, and have noticed some annoying side effects like bad nausea, and sort of a dizzy out of my head feeling. For the most part, it has seemed to work ok, but I want to know if the side effects will subside? I am currently only taking 50mg twice a day. How many hours apart should you space the doses? I've been reading everyones' posts, and it seems people can tolerate much more than I can. I was on 40 mg of Prozac. I am so glad I found this board! Thanks

I was on Paxil for about two and a half years. The withdrawals lasted 8 1/2 weeks. Someone had said it was easier to withdrawal from heroin. I can believe it. From severe dizziness, nausea to chest pain to vertigo. But it does come to an end - Thank God! Amongst other things, I am now on 200mg 5-HTP before bed, and 1800mg SJW during the daytime. That dark and eternal tunnel, that is all too familiar to people of depression, has gone. Below is my list.
Morning:
Multi Vitamin – 2 Tablets Ginkgo Biloba – 2 Tablets – 120mg Glucosamine/Condroitin – 3 Tablets – 1500/1200mg Rhodiola Rosea – 2 Tablets – 680mg Chromium Picolinate – 3 Tablets – 1200mcg Co Q-10 – 6 Tablets – 450mg L-Tyrosine – 2 Tablet – 1000mg DHEA – 2 Tablets – 100mg L-Carnitine – 3 Tablets – 1500mg St. John’s Wort – 6 Tablets – 1800mg
Night Time: 5 HTP – 4 Tablets – 200mg.

Hello, I am curious after this amount of time has your dizziness gone away? I have currently stopped Celexa and sooooooooooo dizzy, Stopped it once before and had to go back on due to dizzyness. I take 1 mg at this time in a liquid. I have a bottle 5HTP I want to try. Did your dizzyness get better or worse from it? Any other side effects? Thanks so much for listening and feel free to email me at [email protected]

When I went through withdrawals from paxil I experienced nausea and dizziness. These symptoms are propbably from the withdrawals not the 5htp.

Do these EVER go away? Do you ever lose the 60+ lbs gained from antidepressants? This dizziness is absolutely awful. I feel like crap.

Yep you are not the only one with the dizzies. Coming off Effexor is the same, with awful side effects however they do last for a while. Sounds like the dizzies and nausea are withdrawals from paxil. They last for a while. However all is not lost! Why don't you just try stopping the 5htp for a couple of weeks and see what happens? Then when the dizzies completely stop, try it again and you will soon find out what was causing it. I am in my sixth day of withdrawal and waiting with baited breath to be two weeks away from the SSRI and then start taking SJW with 5htp to give it a try. Take heart you are not alone in the weight gain. I am determined to lose my excess 60lb as well.

Hi,
I just upped my intake of 5 HTP from 200 to 300mgs. The side effects include a spacey kind of not-quite-here feeling plus I feel like my head has a tight band around it. This is day 3 of the increased dosage. I am not on any kind of SSRI.
