I am currently tapering off of Effexor XR. This is the 3rd SSRI I have tried for my anxiety. I am sick of the side effects. I just can't tolerate them. Needless to say, I am becoming very discouraged. I would like to try a 5HTP and/or SJW regimen to see if it helps my anxiety. (My anxiety consists mostly of shortness of breath and just being nervous a lot.) Can anyone who has had success with 5HTP for anxiety please advise me on dosages??? I have some Wellbutrin SR samples to try, but I would like to give the 5HTP a chance first.
Also, how long should I give the 5HTP and/or SJW to work?
Any advice is very much appreciated.

Hi there, I'm actually doing the same thing, though I just got off of Paxil, not effexor. If you want to know almost everything there is to know about 5-Htp You should buy or borrow the book "5-HTP, the natural way to overcome depression, obesity and Insomnia" by Michael Murray. He says that the usual dose is 100mg three times a day, (that's what I'm taking) though he sometimes reccomends 200mgs 3 times a day. He also discusses the use of SJW along with 5-HTP. In addition to his book, you should absolutely read "The Mood Cure" by Julia Ross. It's phenomenal, and discusses a wider range of emotional difficulties that can be aided by nutritional substances such as L-Tyrosine, 5-HTP and others. Good Luck! I think the 5-HTP is going to make a great difference for you!

as far as i know Wellbutrin is not going to help you with anxiety. i think that one is the only antidpressant that does not treat anxiety. i had the best results with Paxil but had to quit because of side effects. good luck

I take the same regimen as Mari, but I have also included St. John's Wort to help with the anxiety. I had stopped Paxil in December, then tried the 5-HTP regimen (along with multi-vitamins, L-Tyrosine, and Flaxseed Oil) for about a month until I realized that my depression hadn't come back, but my anxiety was still there. I decided to also take 300mg of St. John's three times a day along with the regimen. I am happy to say that this is the best combination I have ever been on. I feel completely normal and have been Paxil-free since December. I wish I would've tried this sooner!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your information!
I do have a question re: the SJW. I've tried SJW in the past, but after about a week I feel like I have the flu all the time. Will this pass after staying on it for a while?

My doctor has tried to get me on Effexor XR. I had suffered from panic attacks, ( work related ) and anxiety, stress, etc. I have been on 5HTP for about a year now, i have not had any panic attacks, sometime i do feel a little anxious but nothing compared to before. It depends on the person on how 5HTP will effect you, sometimes you will notice a effect right away, sometimes it takes a few weeks to build in your system. I do know that you cannot take 5HTP while on SSRI, is will cause seratonin overload, pretty nasty stuff. Personally i take 100mg three times a day, like clockwork, plus 500mg on L-Tyrosine in the morning, along with Vitamin B6 and a handfull of other vitamins. I think the recomended dosage is 50mg a day and then work up, but then again, everone is different. I have been down the SSRI road as well, and after only a few weeks have gone off, I dont like and dont trust them. I do have my days but overall 5HTP was a lifesaver to me.
