i used Paxil for about 8 months and gained 25 pounds with it. now i hear that 5 HTP helps to supress apetite etc. but my apetite was so high with Paxil (that's one reason why i quit it). Now if 5 HTP is similar to Paxil in the sense that it also increases serotonin in the brain how come it can help with weight management? almost all SSRIs cause weight gain- it's not just me or just Paxil. so how is it possible that 5 HTP does the opposite?
do you have any idea about this?

I think only some SSRIs are associated with weight gain; others are statistically associated with slight weight loss.
In any case, given that medical science doesn't understand the mechanism for weight gain with SSRIs, I don't think it would be possible to formulate a proper explanation for weight loss associated with 5-HTP.

ohhh you were the only one to gain weight on paxil..trust me..i was on it 2 years..40mgs..gained 60lbs and all my doc could do is say i had to be eatting more carbs..I WAS NOT EATTING MORE CARBS..lol
i swear i wasnt..LOL so for 2 years we argued about this..lol i knew it was slowing down my metabolism but she just swore that it couldnt be..
urggghhhh she drove me nuts!! finally i got online and went to paxil chats and found hey you know what..i aint nuts..lol there are alot of chubby ppl on paxil..lol
and they werent eatting carbs either..LMAO
so there miss doc:) LOL
so i went on off paxil for a lot of reasons..the weight gain..the fact it helped a lil i thought but wasnt exactly wonderous..my sex drive had gone totally out of the house..without me..
which i kinda blamed on the weight gain but now realize it was probably the paxil too..
and money wise..i lost my insurance..paxil aint cheap ..neither is doc's visits to argue about my exploding non stop weight gain:)
soooooo i kicked paxil..which wasnt fun..i had been on 2 years at 40mgs..i had hellish withdrawls..it got bad..
finally i got off of it..took me awhile..
and after a few months the weight started dripping off..thank god..
so i am totally drug free now..weight comming on off..good good..but here comes my depressions and panic right back and i am like grrrrr...i didnt wanna take another med..i was terrified after the paxil hell.but i didnt wanna waste my life in depression and panic hell either and i was getting more agoraphobic and just realllly falling downhill this time..
so for a time i tried a few other meds..
but it just seemed like i had slipped to far for them to help..
they were just about to put me on the older anti d's and i read some articles about 5htp..now i had tried st johns with no luck before paxil...so i was like thinking i was too far gone for any herbal help..that that was only for ppl with very mild depression/anxiety.not for someone as screwed up as i was..
but something was just buggin me about 5htp...i dont wanna sound like a looney but it was like pure inner voice saying oh just try it will yah..
you got a few weeks before you can get in to the doc to get the hard drugs..lol you might as well try it while you wait..
its only 20 bucks..just try it..
so i did..and oh my god i love this stuff..i am just amazed by it,i have never felt so mellow and balanced in my life..lol
and i havnt gained a lb..lol its not like paxil..i dont know why ssri's make you gain so much and 5htp dosnt..but oh my god..its great..i love this stuff..i really do..
infact i have lost 2lbs since taking it..
its really nice..
now if you wanna know about ssri weight gain i can tell you a good site with good info on it, www.prozactruth.com its the best site i have ever read on why ssri's make you fat..evne has ideas for what to do about it..a herb you can buy that suppossivly will stop ssri weight gain..
so you can read that..it might make more sense to you ..but i can tell you in my experince i have not gained only lost on 5htp..maybe havnt lost as much as others..but i have and havnt gained is the main thing..and i really like this stuff
btw i take 300mgs a day but started at 50mgs..

thanx for sharing your experience.
i lost about 30 pounds in about 5 months after i quit paxil.
i know how difficult it is to quit. believe it or not but even after 7 months i still have ringing in my ears. it never stopped. not even one day.
then i tried effexor, didn`t help. then 5 htp , helped with appetite and weight loss but not with anxiety nor with depression. then i tried prozac, did not do a thing for my anxiety. now i am on Celexa. has been a week yet. we`ll see what happens. but i still am taking 50 mg 5 HTP.
i read that at least you can survive on lower doses of SSRIs if you also take 5 HTP.
at what time during the day are you taking your 5 HTP?
how long did it take to help with panics and anxiety?
any headaches when you take it late or skip a dose?
