There seems to be little evidence for the effectiveness of 5-HTP:

i have been using 5-HTP for 2 months now and it has never helped with my depression or anxiety. Maybe a bit increase in my energy but in terms of depression it did nothing. Im still hoping it kicks in anytime soon, so I'll continue to take it for 1 more month, if not I'll go back to paxil my only resort and the only medication that i have really felt a difference with although im scared to death of possible addictive effects or permanent damages that this chemical drug may cause to our brain & body.

I imagine 5-htp and its efficacy could be much the same as the case is with the different types of SSRIs. Some dont work (or in fact have nasty side effects) for some people, on top of which one has to experiment with dosage to optimise the efficacy of the SSRIs. There unfortunately arent as many options to try when it comes to alternate remedies for depression and anxiety and, yes, the information available on these remedies is largely anecdotal adn from sources who either had success with these, or not. Speaking for myself, SJW had absolutely no effect on me, whilst 5-htp did. 5-htp (for me anyway) is certainly not as potent as paxil, but i too hated the latter. And i will not use an SSRI again.
I used 5-htp for anxiety and dont know what the optimal dosages are for depression, but you may want to check this out before you do away with 5-htp.

No study or anyone else for that matter is going to tell me that 5htp doesn't work when I have used it and felt it's effectiveness first hand. These trials you mention are flawed!!!
Both studies you site say: MAIN RESULTS: 108 trials were located using the specified search strategy. Of these, only two trials, involving a total of 64 patients, were of sufficient quality to meet inclusion criteria. The available evidence suggests these substances were better than placebo at alleviating depression (Peto Odds Ratio 4.10; 95% confidence interval 1.28-13.15; RD 0.36; NNT 2.78). However, the evidence was of insufficient quality to be conclusive.

I think you miss the point - yes the studies are flawed and therefore do not prove the effectiveness of 5-HTP.
It may work for you, but it doesn't work for everybody, despite your advice to everybody who visits this board, I hardly think for example that cutting and pasting from a SINGLE website is particularly objective.

Lighten up Lapster!!! There has been many people who have used it to very good effectiveness. I think you need to apologize to Dupont as your response is uncalled for. If you have nothing good to say then keep your opinions to yourself.
THANKS

Well, I never thought this forum was for OBJECTIVE opinions rather our personal experiences. What bugs me is when people give their opionion and never actually try 5htp.
By all means do your own research I'm not an expert or a doctor, and I try to make that clear by stating, in my opinion or from my experience...what worked for me may not work for anyone else.
Just because those studies are flawed and do not prove the effectiveness of 5htp, doesn't mean it's true. In my opinion 5htp is very effective at the right dose.

Please forgive me, I thought you were a doctor, judging by the volume and type of advice being given.
Silly me

I don't beleive you...It is pretty obvious when you come to this forum there are NO doctors involved only ordinary people sharing their experiences. I think you are too smart to assume everything you read on the internet is true, especially at some forum...you know what happens when you assume?
I'm sorry if I have offended you in some way, and that 5htp hasn't worked for you, if it did I'm sure you would be much more plesant.
Clinical evaluation of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan as an antidepressant drug.
Nakajima T, Kudo Y, Kaneko Z.
Effectiveness of 5-hydroxy-L-trytophan as an antidepressant drug was studied with 59 patients with depressive symptoms using Rating Scale for Depression made by Clinico-Psychopharmacology Research Group in Japan for a preparatory step of a double blind clinical study of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan treatment of depression. A daily dose of 150--300 mg of 5-hydroxyl-L-tryptophan was administered for three weeks. Favorable responses were observed in 40 patients (67.8%), of whom 13 patients were markedly improved. These effects were noticed in 32 patients (80% of the improved patients) within a week of the treatment. Analysis of General Improvement Rating in the various subtypes of depressive symptoms indicated that endogenous depression and involutional or senile depression were the preferable indication of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan loading. The main side effects of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan were gastrointestinal disturbances which were minimized by the simultaneous administration of metoclopromide or trihexyphenidyl.
