"5htp after 10 days" , Thu 7 Feb 02:30

Hi everyone
Until 10 days ago I was taking 2 SJW xday. I replaced them in one day with 5htp. With SJW I just felt really dull and had some unwelcome side effects. I starting exploring herbal relief for depression after a low patch last November. I have been battling with depression since adolescence although I actually didn't know that it was depression. Probably just as well as I finally went through years of counselling to understand what led me to feel the way I did. Anyway 15 years on all I wanted was help in alleviating the symptoms that I experience every now and then. No more analysing, time for living. And as finally love and happiness has come to me I don't want these 'moods' to prevent me from living this joy.
Anyway I immediately felt an effect with the 5htp the first 3 days taking 200mg. The fourth day I hit a big low. The bad feeling swelled up in me again and it came from nowhere. (When it's really bad I lack the detachment or self belief to realise its the depression back but instead am convinced there's something wrong with me) Initially I thought it might even have been the 5htp. But now I think it was triggered by the fact I started a new job and hence the change. Anyway I went up to 300mg but by yesterday (day 9) still didn't feel much better and so took 400mg. Today I'm waiting to see how it goes.
I noticed when I took the 400mg that I got a kind of numbness in my tongue. I was frightened I might even swallow it but then it passed. I remember having a similar feeling the first days with 200mg. Has anyone else felt this?
Anyway, thanks to you all for your contributions here which has been a support to me over the past months.
Daisy

"Give it time!" , Thu 7 Feb 14:42

Hi Daisy,

i am also 10 days on 5HTP now and am little bit unpatient. I take 50 mg 3 times a day and so far so good. No side effects and i feel better but still waiting for full effect. I read that it can take up to several months for some people to work and ups and downs are not unusual during this period. It works differently for different people. Maybe increasing dosage will not make you feel better. Some things need time to happen. Give it more time. When anxiety attack comes I take one benzo and it works. That's it so far i'll see what will happen.

Just remember that it is not the volume or quantity of serotonin derived from the 5-HTP but the REGULATION of serotonin that
improves mood. Low serotonin in the synapses is not a cause but a symptom of depression - Try adjusting the amount of 5-HTP you take and when you take it(5mgs works for some people).

"Depression!" , Thu 14 Feb 03:05:

Chemicals produced and stored in the brain send messages between the brain cells ("neurons"). These chemicals, called "neurotransmitters," are released by signal-sending neurons.

The neurotransmitters cross the space ("synapse") between the neurons and deliver signals to the signal-receiving neuron. They act by attaching to special molecules ("receptors") on the surface of the signal-receiving cells. Each neurotransmitter has its own special receptors.

After a neurotransmitter is released from a neuron, the neuron reabsorbs the neurotransmitter ("reuptake"). When reuptake is blocked, the amount of neurotransmitter is increased in the synapse. It is believed that when the supply of either norepinephrine or serotonin (two important neurotransmitters) is too low, symptoms of depression can result. Antidepressant medications that block the reabsorption of neurotransmitters by the signal-sending neuron can effectively increase the amount of serotonin or norepinephrine, or both, available in the synapse.

In general, antidepressant medications work by increasing the amount of serotonin or norepinephrine, or both, available at the synapses.

If you are not feeling results by now I suggest you increase your dose. Try 100mg in the morning and 100 in the afternoon.
