I am happy to announce the creation of this new forum section for discussions relating to 5-HTP.

While we don't have information pages on the subject (yet!) that are similar to the St. John's Wort pages, I thought this forum would be a good place to start. If there is enough interest I will start reading up on this natural drug for treating depression and see what I can find out.

Also, if you have a favorite 5-HTP related website, please post it here for all to read (and so I can check it out as well).

I still believe in St. John's Wort, that's for sure. But I also believe in alternatives and it is sounding more and more like 5-HTP is a very viable one.

Regards,

k

Hi all, boy am I glad to see this section starting up. Hopefully somebody will be able to post some current info on 5 HTP. I found one good website, it's www.5htp.com . It's basically a Q&A site and it has just enough information to send you off searching for more. I have 2 books on the subject, one is 5-HTP The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity and Insomnia by Michael Murray, N.D. and the other is 5-HTP Nature's Seratonin Solution by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Both are available at Amazon, the first one is out ot print but they had access to several used ones. The 5-HTP site also lists 3 more books and I'll probably order them too.

Sahelian in much more conservative than Murray, basically he's not convinced that enough research has been done on it. Murray advocates combining 5-HTP with SJW for depression and suggests larger doses for a longer period of time.

My concern is that both books were published in 1998 and I have yet to find "current" information.

I have been taking 5-HTP for about 10 days now primarily for weight control and insomnia. I have noticed no side effects and am sleeping like a log and dreaming again, which is something I don't remember doing in months. I have also noticed a definite decrease in my appetite, mood improvement and urges to actually get off the couch and go out for a walk - the neighbor down the road has puppies, maybe that's why I'm wanting to go for walks ;-)

I'm NO EXPERT on the subject but having read both books from cover to cover twice I may be able to answer some basic questions, so fire away and if anybody has access to current info please post it. - Grannie

Hi, I have been taking 5-htp for at least 2 years now. My doctor placed me on it for anxiety. I take 200 mg at bedtime. It has really taken care of the anxiety. I can function again.
I used to have severe panic attacks and could hardly leave my house. But I do not sleep at night. How many milligrams do you take. Not only would I like to sleep better at night, I am also interested in weight loss. Have you lost any weight yet? Do you feel less hunger? Thank you.

Hello.
I was highly interested in your comment on Kelly's SJW site. I myself have severe panic disorder and have been on Zoloft for about a year now, only to have the panic attacks come back full force. I too cannot leave my house or even function when these come on and when they're gone i constantly worry about another. I heard about 5htp from a friend and i was just wondering how i worked for you and your anxiety.
Thanks.

WYLLIE, Most of the books I've read (and the list is growing) suggest taking 50 to 200 mg on an empty stomach 30 minutes before eating for appetite control. I'm not good at taking anything before meals on a regular basis but I did manage to loose 4.5 pounds last week so I'm kind of assuming here that just taking it on a regular basis will help. I'm taking 50 mg with or before meals and 100 mg at night before bed. It must work differently for people because I'm sleeping real well now. I tried Kava Kava prior to 5HTP but it seemed to make me groggy in the morning. My Pharmicist told me to take it 3 times a day but I only did that once coz I had to stay awake long enough to work. I've seen several recommendations on mixing Kava & 5HTP, you might want to try that if you're not sleeping.

Thank you so much for opening your site to 5HPT. If possible I also like to hear from people who are using other herbs and natural substances for depression. Somebody here mentioned Rosavin for depression and Kava for insomnia, I'm very curious about them too.

Hi!
I sent this item to someone suffering fatigue. Seeing as how it relates directly to Rosavin you might be interseted.
After taking prescribed medication for 12mths and suffering chronic sleep disturbance patterns, I experimented with SJW (with a Vit B supplement)as an alternative. Whilst my state of mind improved considerably and my sleep patterns benefited, I found myself in a perpetual state of tiredness that felt 'drug induced'. Like yourself, I have always been very active and the lethargy which seemed to be greatest during the day (to the extent that I was desperate for a short sleep most afternoons) became increasingly frustrating. After taking SJW for 6mths I switched to an alternative herbal source known as Rosavin, this is the herb Rhodiola rosea, commonly called "Golden Root," or "Arctic Root" (check it out on a search engine). I used it for 1mth and have now been 'drug free for 2 weeks. My energy levels seem to be returning to normal with the depression seemingly overcome. Hope this is of some help!

If you are interested I can post you an item on Rosavin

Andy, I was wondering if Rosavin requires a particular brand. I searched it on the net and there are plenty. Which gave you good results. The insurmountable fatigue is what I am experiancing. I you could drop me a line. I would be so ever greatful. God Bless

Just FYI I tried the Rosavin. Felt it did NOTHING. Ended up returning it to the store half used for my money back. Oh well. I had used the Jarrow brand - which is pretty well respected I think. Got it at Whole Foods.

Hi. I ran across this section after doing a search for Rosavin. Rosavin was recommended to me by Dr. Richard Brown, the Sam-e specialist out of NY. He uses both Sam-e and Rosavin with his patients and has had tremendous results.
The thing to remember just like with Sam-e is that you have to be very careful with the brands you use! He only recommended on brand by Ameriden. You can find info here....

Hi Gena,

I saw your post on the SEM-e Support page too. I did some research on-line, it seems like a good product to use along other product like SJW, SAM-e or 5HTP. Are you using it now? How does it work for you? I can't find it at any store. Do you know of any store where I can buy it? By the way, when you call Dr. Richard Brown, does he charge consultation fee? Sorry for all these questions. Maybe you can answer these questions on the SAM-e page too, I am sure people on the SAM-e Support page would like to know too. Thank you very much.

I tried Rosavin but it didn't help my depression one bit. I took 2 pills a day like the box suggested. Well, at least I had no bad side effects either. Now I'm not sure if the brand wasn't righ for me or I should have given it more time with a higher dose.
As far as 5HTP is concerned, it does wonders for my food cravings(i have an eating disorder) but nothing for depression and anxiety.

I have been trying Rosavin, I have a better recall of spelling words correctly, but I have been getting severe hand tremors and leg twitches from this. Gensing does the same thing anyone else get this.
