Topic Title: Why is depression/anxiety so common?
| | "Why is depression/anxiety so common?" , Tue 21 Mar 13:24:
Hello everyone. This is my first post and I also may be suffering from anxiety/depression. Why do so many people out there experience this horrible illness? I used to be a relatively happy person, but since I graduated from college three years ago, I feel unmotivated and have extreme anxiety at times. My mind also races with uncontrollable negative thoughts that erode my self-confidence and paralyze me with fear. I now believe these symptoms may have been present for many years, but I ignored them. I did some research on Amoryn and Seredyn and am thinking of purchasing the two. I took Wellbutrin for three months, but it became extremely expensive and I prefer not to take pharmaceutical medications. Since I am not very educated on this topic, is what I am experiencing typical of anxiety, depression or both? Thanks for any responses.

Anxiety and depression usually come together, actually. Most of the clinical diagnostic tools for depression include anxiety as part of their criteria. In fact, that's why it took me so long to figure out that my problems were depression-related, because I seem to be incapable of anxiety in the traditional sense. (However, I have all the signs of ADHD, including a reversed reaction to neural stimulants--meaning anxiety would be manifested in me as calm and indifference, of which I have an unnaturally large amount. And the few signs of ADHD I don't have could not coexist with depression...so while I didn't quite match the profile of either, I perfectly match the profile of someone who has both...)
Generally anxiety is associated with the serotonin-side of depression, meaning Wellbutrin wouldn't be the first choice. (I imagine it was prescribed due to your lack of motivation, as it does reportedly target that) I was on Wellbutrin for a while too; it mostly just meant I was perpetually pissed off.
Note, however, that I am not a doctor or a psychiatrist. (I'm merely a psychology student who's father is a doctor, which is why I do know a bit.)

Hi Tigerman (!)
You have come to the right place and I hope that you find information that will help you here.
In my opinion, it is normal that most people worry (have 'concern') a little bit from time to time or develop a little bit of anxiety before certain activities, because this keeps us on our toes, but if this worry becomes debilitating and starts to affect the persons life negatively then it can and better be looked at.
I'd advise that you think about what is currently going on for you in your life and what it is exactly that you are worrying about. Also that you aim to work hard at the goals you have, or could begin to develop, whilst accepting the things that you dont like where possible. Be easy and not so hard on yourself, others or the world. Accept yourself with your real and perceived shortcomings and strengths and faults and dont damn and rate yourself against others or your ideal "you" too much, which people can tend to do when they are thinking to themselves.
I believe that excercise, healthy eating, regular sleeping, maybe a herbal drug such as St Johns Wort, relaxation time and engaging hobbies all may help.
Have you concerned visiting your doctor who may be able to offer some counselling services. I had a friend who considered counselling and decided to go and see a therapist his doctor recommended and hes been doing a lot better now with so much weight off his chest.
I hope that you find some of this info helpful and useful, and that as you continue to pick more information up, you become more empowered and feel in control of your illness, which can be done, and with a little work and effort, may not be as hard as it seems.
