"Vitamin D effective for SAD???" , Sun 19 Mar 15:25:

I don't know weather I have seasonal affective disorder or not, but i do know that my depression symptoms get alot worse when it is dark, or the middle of winter. I just read alot about vitamin D being helpful in that kind of depression. I was wondering if anyone has had any positive results with it for SAD???

If you have been diagnosed with SAD and you haven't already done this, get your hands on a light box.

I have found light therapy to be by far the most effective treatment for my SAD-related condition. A quick Google search on 'light box therapy' will give tons more info along with possible suppliers.

As far as vitamin D is concerned, like you, I read that a supplement could help with the symptoms of SAD. This seems to make perfect sense given that sunlight absorbtion by the skin triggers the production of vitamin D, so we might be 'missing out' in the Winter months.

In particular, I read that a daily dose over 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) was required. There are relatively few vitamin D supplements on the market (compared with the B complex, C etc.). The one I managed to find was by Now Foods and I ordered it through their website www.nowfoods.com

Unfortunately, I can't honestly say it has made a great deal of difference. By all means give it a try, but IMO the light box wins by a country mile.

Hope this helps.

Sheephead.

The NOW Foods double strength cod liver oil is quite good, I have been using it for about 6 months.

You can also get a full spectrum lightbulb for your normal house lighting that is said to help, I have just ordered one and it's probably better than sitting in front of a lightbox looking stupid....just kidding but I will let you know how it turns out for me.

Even something simple like positioning your TV, computer, place where you read in a part of the room where there is a lot of natural light during the day is a good idea, just to make sure you get an hour or so of bright daylight per day.

I am writing this letter in simple English in order that everyone can read and understand my words. With this letter, I hope to work together towards a shared vision. But first, I would like to make the following introductory remark: I don't know which are worse, right-wing tyrants or left-wing tyrants. But I do know that Mr. Lovely insists that a knowledge of correct diction, even if unused, evinces a superiority that covers cowardice or stupidity. Sorry, Mr. Lovely, but, with apologies to Gershwin, "it ain't necessarily so." I realize that sadism is a tremendous problem in our society, but does it constantly have to be thrown in our faces? To ask that question another way, why aren't our children being warned about him in school? That's the big question. If you knew the answer to that then you'd also know why Mr. Lovely and I disagree about our civic duties. I assert that we must do our utmost to exercise all of our basic rights to the maximum as expeditiously as possible. Mr. Lovely, on the other hand, believes that obscurity, evasiveness, incomprehensibility, indirectness, and ambiguity are marks of depth and brilliance. What I want to document now is that I must ask that his attendants oppose our human vices wherever they may be found -- arrogance, hatred, jealousy, unfaithfulness, avarice, and so on. I know they'll never do that, so here's an alternate proposal: They should, at the very least, back off and quit trying to heat the cauldron of terror until it boils over into our daily lives. The bottom line is that much of Mr. Lovely's behavior is not rationally calculated to be of benefit to the immoral, self-righteous pseudo-intellectuals whom he claims to be trying to help.

I'm looking past Sir Sheephead's oligophrenic, malign dissertation and I thank him for the compliment.
