I am having some minor surgery in a few weeks and am wondering if it is necessary to stop taking SJW ?? A friend of mine claims that SJW works as a blood thinner; therefore, I should stop taking it two weeks prior to the surgery. The surgeon initially told me it was no problem to continue taking it, then later recounted, but told me to stop taking it just 4 days prior to surgery. Does that make any sense at all? SJW is not going to be cleared from my system in only 4 days! I'm very skeptical about the medical establishment's knowledge about SJW!!! Thanks for any advice you can offer...

Since I was having surgery in January, I did research on this topic and concluded that I should stop taking my thrice-daily SJW one week before. I did and haad not complications.

Before my surgery in January, I did a web search on this and discovered that SJW is like a blood thinner, and also that it interfers with the anesthesia during surgery. I have read that one should stop using SJW 4 weeks before surgery. I don't think ALL doctors or anesthesiologists are aware of this......same with fish oil, and ginko. I had surgery in January, and did stop using SJW, which does put you in a bind, depression wise....but you don't want things going wrong during surgery. I think I used the words surgery, herbs, dangers, for the web search and found my info.

I'm so happy to have found this (older) thread! I'm going to have surgery relatively soon and have been a little restless about the question wheter to stop sjw or not.I live in Mexico-City,and though we have very qualified doctors here,there is not much knowledge about herbs and possible effects/interactions.Most of the surgeons I saw either had no idea what St.John's Wort was or said I could just take it without problem,even if I was gonna have surgery.
Hmmmm;am so grateful for the internet.Thanks to research I now know how to prepare for the event,and though I don't particularly want to,I'll definitely stop taking the wort at least 2 weeks before.

Sorry to move away from the thread subject slightly but i was just wondering;
Im having a blood test next week and was wondering if i should stop taking SJW before that?
