Topic Title: DOSAGE/TIMING/ALCOHOL

Hi, great to find this site. I am new to the world of 'depression' and trying my hardest to find the best thing for me. Doctor prescribed Citalopram, but after one day i refused to take it because of the side effects. Bought SJW in 500mg tablets, and have been taking 2 a day for 5 days, but read on your site that max. dose per day should be 900mg. Am i taking too much? (No point asking doctor, doesnt really have a clue)I take it all in the morning. I am not sure how it mixes if taken alongside alcohol, which if i am going to drink it would be in the evening.I find a little queasiness in the morning after taking it. Any suggestions would really be gratefully received as i am having to find my own way with this. Glad the site is here.

Hi dont know if this will help as I am only 4 weeks in but feeling positive effects from SJW.
I have experienced depression twice and been successfully treated with anti depressents. However the side effects took their toll and I swore I would not return to them. It took me months to get off the addictive Seroxat.
So the darkness re appeared this year and I have turned to SJW for the first time. I discovered that some makes seem to be better than others. I have read that either Kira or Perika are the most tried and favoured brands.
I take 3 x 300mg of Perika a day. One with each meal. It seems to spread it out and helps me sleep. However I wish I could sleep past 6am though! Have you though about spreading the dose out?
Alcohol messes me up emotionally. But I do drink at least once a week and suffer the next day for it! If you can, avoid it. I guess everyones different. Have you thought about leaving it out? (I really look forward to my bottle of wine on a Sat!) However I am an emotional mess the following evening!
Hope this helps hope it works for you.

Thanks for the reply. I have cut down to one 500mg tablet in the morning, but think i have worked out that what i was eating it with was the problem, rather than the dose. Trial and error i suppose.
Have had alcohol, and dont seem to have suffered anything that i wouldnt normally suffer, if that makes sense, so i will see what happens. Alcohol never caused me problems emotionally, so hope it doesnt now. Although i have cut down since all this began.
I suppose i just have to work out what works for me, but as i havent been 'here' before its all a bit new and scary really. Thanks again. You have helped just by the support you have given.

Interesting conclusion - What were you eating it with? Are you eating OK now?
Do you think 500mg will be enough? I believe the recommended dose is 900mg per day. However I am no Dr!
I can only think back to the first time I experienced depression to guess how you are feeling. Scary, yes, but remember it will pass (it will) and you will get back to your old self, or better. Its a phase and most importantly you are doing something about it.
I pray you will find the support you need via this and other sites. You are not alone in this.

Thank you, you have no idea how much that means to me. The thing making me queasy was Marmite of all things, and i only realised that it could be a problem by reading something else on this site. I stopped it and the queasiness has just about gone now. I am eating fine, i always do!
I think i will try and increase the dose a little more. A week in and can feel that today is going to be a good day so maybe its all starting to kick in. Be interested to know if any one has had any other similar effects with any food.
Thanks again.
