I have hypothyroidism and take synthroid everyday, and I will for my entire life. Unfortunately, I have been battling depression much longer than I have had the hypothyroidism. Does anyone know if and how St. John's Wort will affect and interact with my current medication, Synthroid, and if it would be safe to take sjw??

Hi queenbee (what a name). Im reyhav. I just want to share some information i have. Sis, have you heard a herb name VIRGIN COCONUT OIL. Its extract coming from pure oil of coconut. Study say here in our country that it has many benifit and one of them are on HYPOTHYROIDISM (so looong words). Its very popular here in our country since we are no# exporter of that herbs thats why its cheap here and its gaining popularity in the others nations as well. You can research other detail of that in the internet. I hope you can try that since its very natural and has no known side effect.

I don't have an exact answer for you (yet);however I'd like to tell you what my experience has been in that area.I've been taking sjw for many years,about 4,on a regular basis;starting with 3 a day,then 2 and now sometimes just one ,sometimes 2.
Some months ago,I was diagnosed with hypothyroidsm and am on Eutirox 50 (that's the name here in Mexico).I too was curious if there was some interaction or if the wort could reduce the effect of the medication.On the one hand,my doc said there was no problem,but on the other hand sjw is known to lower the effectiveness of some meds.I've searched on the internet,but not found any clear info.
On some days,when I take 2 sjw pills,I feel I'm not as alert as I am normally,and that's started after taking Eutirox.
So,in conclusion;I think it's maybe different in everyone.Since there doesn't seem to be official information on combining the two;I'd just experiment with different dosages and see how it works for you.
It would be great if you informed us about ur experience and if you find some answer;because from what I've seen;there are more people on this board who suffer from thyroid problems;especially hypothyroidsm.

I will talk to my doctor too, in a couple of weeks. I think maybe it would be best to take sjw at night, since I take my other meds in the morning. I have found that it is best to wait at least 4 hours after synthroid before taking other things, especially calcium and iron supplements, which are known to interfere with the absorption of thyroid meds. Of what other meds does sjw reduce the effectiveness? it really sucks having multiple problems! Not everything mixes well, and it's hard to stay well-balanced!
