"Anyone else on here use a lightbox.....?" , Mon 6 Mar 11:01:

I was diagnosed with Seasonally Affective Disorder (SAD) last November. To those people unfamiliar with this condition, it basically causes depressive symptoms in sufferers, usually between the merry months of October and March (but often sets off a depressive condition that can last throughout the year) and is caused by lack of stimulus to the brain due to lack of light.

I had suffered from depression on and off for four years and although I had vaguely heard of SAD it never occurred to me that I was suffering from it.

I was prescribed an antidepressant called Moclobemide. This was completely useless and just made me restless and edgy.

However, I had read on this board about the possible use of light therapy to treat depression (especially SAD), by means of using a light box, so I took the executive decision to go out and buy one.

I wouldn't say it has transformed my life, but it has definitely raised my general level and improved the amount and quantity of my sleep......given me a better day / night cycle.

Has anyone else on here used a lightbox??....and if so, did it help?

Does anyone else on this board feel their depression may have some sort of seasonal link?

My Consultant reckoned that often people attribute their depression to stress and immediate environment-related factors, completely unaware that seasonal lack of light is the root cause behind their depressive symptoms. What do you reckon??
