"switching from SJW to Citalopram" , Mon 27 Feb 14:32:

I currently take two UK Kira One-a-Day tablets daily (I double my dose because I have severe major depression), but it's just not cutting through the black cloud anymore. I'm thinking of trying an SSRI like Cipramil (Celexa in the US), how long do I have to wait for the SJW leave my system before I can take an SSRI? I've heard that a serotonin burnout is possible if the two drugs interact, how do I prevent this?

Before saying anything about Citalopram, I notice from your posting that you are taking two UK Kira per day. Kira dosage advice has been the subject of much discussion on this board going back a few years.

You may be familiar with this discussion, but basically in the UK, Kira's 'one a day' 300mg tablet is actually the same strength as most other brands' 'three a day' tablets.

In other words, if you take three Kira 'one a day' tablets, you will be taking what is usually regarded as the 'norm' daily dose.

I e-mailed Lichtwer Pharma three years ago about this discrepancy in dosage advice and their response was that because Kira is sold in the UK as an 'over the counter' treatment (i.e. not via prescription) they use a lower suggested doseage on their UK packs.

If you delve back into this message board about two or three years there was extensive discussion on this topic. My advice would be, in the first instance, to go to three Kira 300mg tablets per day......although even this may not be enough to counteract your 'severe' depression.

Before trying a prescription antidepressant, if Kira isn't working I would try one other research-strength brand, such as Perika.

As far as Citalopram / Celexa / Cipramil is concerned, my wife takes it for an anxiety-related depression with good results (although given its full name of citalopram hydrobromide, it has a predictable effect on libido). I took it for six weeks last summer for withdrawal and fatigue-realted depression and it wiped me out....it seemed to act like a glorified sedative, which was the last thing I needed!

....as with everything relating to depression and medication different things work for different people, although my feeling is, because of its sedative action, that citalopram works better for anxiety / panic / related depression involving some degree of emotional upset.

This is just my personal opinion.....hope it helps.
