"Very Interesting Website on Depression" , Sun 15 Jan 13:01:

Been a while since I've posted on here - hope everyone is doing well and that 2006 brings us all some happiness!

I recently came across the following website which focusses on depression, its causes, sypmtoms and treatments.

There was lots of information that I hadn't read before and it appears to be at least partially substantiated by legitimate research.

The section about what they term 'over-dreaming' is extremely interesting and is something I have never heard of before. It would explain the 'waking up exhausted' factor very well, and, might go some way to explain why in the early stages of SJW use symptoms can get worse (vivid dreams being one of the most common initial side effects).

Also, the part about the result of depression and, in particular the above causing a weakened immune system was also interesting (just fighting off my third cold in about 4 months!!).

Anyway, I'll leave you all to browse through it, would be interested to hear what you think of the information there-within!

If there is anyone left on the forum who remembers me - here's a big hello!! (Which naturally extends to everyone else here, too!!).

Cheers!

David

"David - I remember" , Tue 24 Jan 20:52

David

I remember you from a while back. I visit this site off and on. I have been on SJW for a few years...things are good for me.

Anyway, I wish more of the longer time users would post. Please let us know how you are doing and how sjw is treating you.

"EXCELLENT site - thanks for sharing!" , Fri 20 Jan 19:23

David - I loved this site!! It pointed towards some of the main cognitive distortions experienced by depressed people - well, at least the things that get me down. I'm very interested in buying the tapes. Haven't looked at the price yet... don't know if I'm ready for that!

I appreciate how they acknowledge that the "classical" psychodynamic style of therapy is not usefull and may be in fact damaging to a depressed person. We don't need to dwell on past memories of historical feelings of inadequacy - we need to learn social skills and perceptual skills so we can move forward with our lives.

I also agree that the vivid dream concept is facinating. I've always been a dreamer. And now with SJW, my dreams are extremely vivid and quite disruptive. I've always felt worst in the mornings. Now with SJW, its actually a bit worse (and I take my pills in the am to avoid sleep problems).

Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this site!

"But - can depression be cured?" , Sat 21 Jan 09:55:

David - I've been thinking more about the site and believe that I disagree with one of the main points that the Depression Learning Path web site proposes - that depression can be "cured" and that we won't need to take meds anymore.

I expect that for a large percentage of people that this could be true. The more I read about cognitive theory and the more I watch others, I see how they drive themselves towards depression. But I've been at this for several decades now, and I can't seem to shake off my depressive episodes. With the great amount of reading that I've been doing, and with regular exercise and treating my body well during an episode; I've been able to keep the depression from lasting quite as long. But I still become greatly depressed (which manifests with a lack of self-confidence and an unrealistically negative view of the world and my future in it) versus just, well, sad.

I'm not a religious person, but I've been finding a lot of wisdom in buddhist philosophies (which blend very well with cognitive theories) and have found a lot of comfort from the writings of the more-experienced monks and nuns. Even they discuss how difficult it can be for them to not distort their perceptions of the world towards the negative and hopeless. And, well, geez, they live some of the most "protected" lives I can imagine. They live in peacefull, well-kept monasteries and are surrounded by people who adore them.

How can we average humans handle all the pressures and stresses of the world while we work so hard to make it through our lives? My husband is a great guy and supports me, but even he has his problems (extreme all-or-nothing thinking which he verbilizes to me often. I've been asking him for 4 years to examine that behavoir and to please, at least not do it around me. He's improved a LITTLE, but I think its mostly to avoid having me get mad at him for it). Our work is stressfull and clients are always pushing us to bend our morals and to work for less than we are worth. Its tough to make close friends because everyone is so very busy struggling through their own lives. And I'm sure that I speak for most of us when I say that money troubles are always a great scarey unknown.

Life is not easy. That's just the way it is. I don't think that, especially in this crazy, sped up world, that many of us with strong depressive tendencies can be happy with just some tweaking of our congitive perception skills.

Whew! What do you think?

Ravengrlll Id recomend "A Guide To Rational Living" by Albert Ellis and Harper. Sounds like you work very hard and are trying everything you can to overcome depression, as I am. Good Luck x
