hi , i'm about to start taking st johns wort and was wondering if you could give me some advice please. i've looked at about 3 or 4 different brands and they all contain the ingredient hypericin , which i was told to look out for. i've also been told about ' hyperforin ' but i can't see this word mentioned on any of the brands i've looked at. should this be mentioned on the box or is it just an ingredient that is in the tablet? thanks. richard.

Hi Richard-
Hypericin and hyperforin are not *ingredients* of SJW tablets per se. They aren't *added* to the SJW. Hypericin and hyperforin are naturally occuring constituents (chemical components) of the SJW plant itself. Scientists are unsure whether the main active substance in SJW is hypericin, hyperforin, a combination of these, or something else altogether.
Traditionally hypericin has been the component that supplement makers measure and use to "standardize" their SJW products, i.e. to try and make each dose contain the same level of the active component.
More recently some people have started to think that hyperforin is more important, so some newer products are standardized to hyperforin. There are also a few companies that make SJW products that claim to have guaranteed levels of both hypericin and hyperforin.
The reason there is so much confusion and disagreement about whether one should choose a hypericin-standardized product or a hyperforin-standardized product is that different people respond very differently to the various preparations of SJW.
Some people swear by the newer (newer does not always mean better) hyperforin-standardized products. However, many people, myself included, get along *much* better on hypericin-standardized products. You will see many posts on this forum from people who get uncomfortably agitated/anxious if they take a hyperforin-rich SJW product. Others will swear by the hyperforin products like Perika.
The truth is, it completely depends on each person's physiology. Some people do much better with hypericin-standardized SJW products. Others do much better with hyperforin-standardized products. It's silly to say that one product is superior or inferior for everyone or even for most people.
Perhaps the best advice that most everyone here will probably agree with is, if one brand doesn't work well for you, try another brand. SJW formulations vary incredibly, even if two products are both standardized to the same amount of hypericin or hyperforin. You will see a tremendous number of posts on this forum from people who write "I tried brand "X" because blah-blah-blah, but it didn't do much for me (or made me feel terrible). Then I tried brand "Y" and woah, I got my life back again."
Okay, I hope this brain-dump helps answer some questions. Best wishes finding the SJW product that works best for you. Keep the faith, have patience, try everything, and good luck.
