"Dosage help!" , Thu 5 Jan 13:09

I have been taking St. John's Wort for about 6 months now. It took about 6 weeks to really kick in, but once it did it made a huge difference. Slowly, I have had to up my dosage from 900mg. When I do, I notice a difference. I have tried to go back, but it isn't enough. When I bought a new bottle a few weeks ago, I didn't realize the dosage had changed and accidentally took 1800 mg. I felt like a new person! I was afraid of taking that much though and cut it back to 1500, but it isn't enough. 1800 is the "magical dose" for me. I took it again yesterday after feeling lousy for a week. I am already noticing the difference.

So, my question is....is 1800 mg. a day safe??

TIA

Dear Pinky3,
Wish I could help but I haven't seen anything on that high of a dose. If you don't find any definative answer, I would say just listen to your body. If that is the magic dose for you, go with it for awhile. Maybe after your depleted body catches up on what you need, you can cut back.
There is also a huge difference between brands. It may be that your brand doesn't really contain as much as it says it does and if you tried, for example, Kira brand, you would only need 900mg.

I really appreciate your input even if you don't know the answer. I am taking the Spring Valley brand at Walmart. The only other brand I have taken has been the NOW brand. I wonder what would happen if I switched to Kira?

Thanks again so much!

Pinky - I found it! I knew I had read about a dose of 1800 mg and couldn't find it. I just did - Its right here in Kelly's site - go to the link for "the archive", then select "really interesting readings". The first set of letters are by someone named George. His last letter has this:

Kelly, I have been in recent contact with Peter McWillimms (co-author of Hypericum and Depression) about the use of St. John's wort and more severe cases of depression. He tells me that taking 1800mg per day is apparently really working for people with more severe cases of depression.

I can't say anything more, and I only need 600 mg myself. Maybe you can google that Peter McWillimms guy?
