Topic Title: Panic Attacks

Hi all,
Came across this great site. Thanks Kelly for putting up a site like this.
I've been diagnosed to have panic attacks (disengaged from reality, chills, nausea, dizziness you name it I had it). Went through the ER a couple of times. Went through a few docs also before the correct diagnosis. Anyhow, she put me on Zoloft. It worked good when I took it for 3 months. But the side effects really sucked. Isomnia, weight gain (15 lbs.) and sexual side effects......
So I got off of it.... slowly. The first 2-3 weeks went by okay. But since couple weeks ago I started feeling nauseous and dizzy and low energy. Though all these symptons never developed into a full blown panic attack. All the while I've been doing some extensive research on the web regarding herbal remedies.
Long story short, I started taking SJW last night (Standardized Extract from Target). Today I am feeling more sleepy, more dizzy.... But I am willing to give SJW a 3-month try.
My questions are: has any of you w/ panic disorder had success with SJW? Anyone took the Target Brand (Standard Extract Origin), any good? Is anxiety disorder and panic attacks pretty much the same thing? Thanks in advance.

Hi Billy,
Sorry to hear you are not feeling too well at the moment. Panic attacks are the most horrible thing and unless you go through them, people have no idea how dibilitating they are. I had bad panic for 4 months last year ( I''ve had it off and on for 9 years ) and I am only now starting to feel a bit better, I have only been on St John's Wort for a week but I can honestly say that I feel a difference. My panic came from deep rooted anxiety but the two are linked. My mind doesnt race and I don't have that dull/cloudy/dizzy feeling inside my head. I take one 900mg dose in the morning from Boots the chemist ( I'm in England ) but I know others take 3 doses of 300, 3 times a day. All I can say is try it. I know when the panic comes, you think you're going crazy and that it will never end but you're not and it will. It takes a lot of practice telling that voice in your head to shut up but just keep doing it and relief is at hand.
Take care Billy, my thoughts are with you.

Could I recommend a book to people with panic attacks? Its called "emotional alchemy" by Tara Bennet-Goleman. She includes a lot of new information that has been learned about the brain and how it can be "re-wired" from its habitual patterns. Did you know that your perception of events during the first 1/4 second is incomplete? Our primitive fight-or-flight behavior patterns must often be reckoned with, and she has some thoughtfull ways to gently work your brain through a crisis.
I've only had a few panic attacks (an unusual behavior for me, and I believe they were brought on by taking Wellbutrin. Another poster also said the stuff gave him panic attacks too); but my limited experience let me know I don't want to suffer through something as debilitating as that again.

Thanks a lot guys for responding to my email. Really appreicate it. I'm on SJW for 6 days now. Only 300mg per day. I wanted a slow introduction. Will probably increase the dose to 600mg in the next few days.
Seems like I'm feeling a bit better. Not sure if it's SJW or the placebo effect. :-)
Yes I have been training my brain to not panic when I start to feel a potential attack is on the way. It seems to be working.
Thanks again. I'm sure I will have more questions later....
Happy New Year Everyone!
Billy
PS I will definitely check out that book.

Hi Billy,
I'm experiecing the same thing, I've been on Seroxat on/off for the past 7 years, I've had PA or SP for 18 years.
Seroxat does help with depression, but takes 2-3 weeks but I thought I'd try SJW for the first time as the side effects of Paroxetine / Paxil / Seroxat arn't worth the side effects anymore.
I've taken SJW 4 days now, and there is actually less depression but there's a way to go as I know from previous experience.
The research (SJW) looks promising although, the root-cause for many people's experience of depression is actually panic or anxiety disorder, the other herbal remedy for dealing with panic attacks specifically is Kava ( Kavalactones ) which actually work on the amygdala (The part of the brain related to panic disorder)
