How does prescribed meds compare to SJW? Same results?
Would going to a professional and geeting prescribed meds be a waste of my time?

If you to to a psychiatrist and he/she thinks that medication is appropriate, they will recommend only synthetic pharmaceutical drugs. You need to understand that they have that line of thinking / prejudice. A general counselor is not allowed to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs and is there to help you think things through and give you lots of important support.

For better or for worse, I think most of us on this board have a prejudice AGAINST pharmaceutical drugs, because:

- Although they undoubtedly help some people, many of us here have had bad or very bad experiences on synthetic medication.

- Particularly for men, all the common SSRI antidepressants are notorious for slashing your libido and ability to orgasm to little or nothing. I found this extremely frustrating and depressing in and of itself and is the reason I went off Prozac.

- Prescription antidepressants typically cost around US$ 100 a month or more, unless an insurance company is paying for part of it.

- Several popular herbal or over the counter antidepressants (SJW, 5-HTP, SAM-e) can provide the same good effects for many people without the common nasty side-effects.

- Prescription drug companies are evil, peddling synthetics because herbal medicines cannot be patented and therefore do not lend themselves to the mega-profits drug companies are used to.

Many common herbal medicines have been used for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. How's that for testing? How long have Prozac, Paxil (crossing myself), and Zoloft been around?

Okay, end of rant. I will admit that Prozac helped me effectively when I was in a very bad way before I found SJW. However, after a few months I was not willing to be a eunuch any longer.

Everyone's different. Good luck finding out what works for you.

Thank you for your reply.
You remind me of a biker buddy I'd lost.
He was a good man.
You sound like you genuinely want to help.(and have experiences that I could gain by listening.)
I may be impatient in waiting for SJW to fully take effect, (or maybe it already has and doesn't work for me.) Either way I need to make a change for the good very soon. I do not want to be the reason for any more heart-ache that I already cause. My daugher is 9 yrs. old and she doesn't talk to me since I've been "down". Either by her own, or her mother(my wife) has giving her fore-warning to shun me, when she does say something to me it feels very distant. Seclusion and lonelyness is now what awaits me at home. Thanksgiving was ruined,as well Christmas will be too if I can't help myself by then. That scares kids and I don't want to be that negative memory in my daughter's head. I just don't know where to turn next.
If I could snap out of it I would.

Hi Mangler...First of all, Good Luck with all of this...it stinks to feel that way and to know you're causing those you love to distance themselves from you...but still feel like you cant help it. :( You can tho...and are...just by being here. (and me too for that matter! :)

What made you decide to try SJW and not something else...Sam-e for instance? Im at the point now of trying to decide which to try. I dont want to be tired during the day and esp dont want my libido lessened.

Hi Mangler. I've read several of your posts and my heart goes out to you. Good luck getting through this initial point where you're trying to make changes! I understand your struggles with your daughter and wife. My husband is so understanding, but still can't help but withdraw from me, causing me to spiral deeper and feel greater self-pity.

As I just mentioned to someone previously, I've just been taking SJW for about a week and I personally felt an immediate response. The response was similar to when I used to take Wellbutrin, which I am taking as a good sign that SJW is effective for my personal body chemistry. (I only stopped Wellbutrin and Depakote because I no longer have health insurance and my new career makes less money than I used to).

I'd like to respond to H20Buffalo also, because I had the opposite response (sexually) with Wellbutrin than his and many other's experiences with other drugs such as Paxil and Prozac. Actually, they're now trying to get Wellbutrin approved as a female sex aid, because it stimulates females so much. I actually look back at my Wellbutrin days and feel a little nervous, because my sexual appetite became so huge at that time, that I was more tempted to behave irresponsibly. I also liked your response to why folks on this board don't necessarily want to do the synthetic route.

Another important thing you need to know is that most synthetic drug alternatives also take over 30 days to reach an effective level in your bloodstream.

Do you read much? I used to scoff at self-help, personal-development books, but now I LOVE them. Drugs are fine to help kick-start the body chemistry back to functionality; but if you want to maintain a healthy life, I believe you MUST incorporate reading, exercise, and healthy diet (cut out the sugars, preservatives, and added hormones!). I wrote a post in the "Experiences" section on Dec 7 where I outlined my favorite books. Here they are again:
"Hapiness is a Choice", by Barry Kaufman
"Feeling Good", by David Burns
"Emotional Alchemy", by Tara Bennett-Goleman, and
"The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power", by Vernon Howard
In my previous post, I describe these books in greater detail.

I try to read for 20 minutes each morning and each night, to try to set my mind straight. I find that when I make time for that, it really helps me get through the day in a good attitude. Much of the stuff in these books might seem like common sense, but it helps to be reminded sometimes and to know that you aren't alone.

Good luck!

Hi Raven-

Tee-hee-hee. Wellbutrin made me a very horny toad, too. As you probably know, Wellbutrin doesn't target serotonin like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc. do, but rather dopamine and norinephrine (sp?). I think most people report increased horniness on Wellbutrin. If I had to go back on prescription medicine, I would probably go back to this one. However I remember it also made me uncomfortably anxious- e.g. I would feel uncomfortable/painfully shy walking down the street for no reason- and it also gave me super-intense technicolor dreams that were an ordeal. I remember, for instance, a dream in which my cat became a glowing, throbbing metalic green color. It wasn't pleasant night after night. :- ) Anyway, glad it worked for you! Thanks for posting the book recommendations, too.

tee-hee-hee right back atcha!

Interesting that you got social anxiety from Wellbutrin. I got it too. Shopping in the supermarket was terrifying! That's why I tried Paxil and learned how much I hated it.

Prescription meds are okay only if one knows the truth about the potential negative consequences. For instance, impotence, and hair loss and the drug dependence.
