"SJW - Great, but feel strange now?" , Mon 28 Nov 03:21

Hi,

I have been using St Johns Wort for about the last 6-7 months. I was on Prozac before (20mg per day) for about a year. When I came off,I went on to SJW as well as Vitamin B, lecithin and omega-3 rich foods. For the last 4 months or so I have also kept up a regular fitness/excercise training routine.

Just this week, I have found myself feeling up-tight, nervy and having intrusive obsessive morbid thoughts, and had sexual response problems. I forgot a couple of doses of SJW and felt much better - with reduction of all above symptoms. Has anyone else ever experienced this kind of thing? I wonder - once your brain has re-adjusted and produces enough serotonin and other neurotransmitters, can AD's including SJW push levels up leading to nervousness and other symptoms as I describe?

I have also been under a bit of stress at work this week - finding it a bit much. It was stress which made it necessary for me to go on AD's in the first place.

It is a bit awkward at this time as I have a job interview this week - and I want to do OK at it (and land the job!), so I hope I can keep on an even keel!

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that I have had a similar experience. I took HBC protocols a couple of years ago with wonderful results - it really helped with my low-grade depression. I foolishly stopped taking it and didn't pick it up again until recently. This time, however, I can't get more than 10 days in me - it makes me feel sooo uptight, irritated, and depressed and the worst part is that it has evoked intrusive, ugly thoughts - something that I have never experienced until now. So I went off of it of course but the symptoms remain - they are fading though and I know that the sjw will leave me completely eventually but this has been a very unpleasant experience.
I too was on 10 mg prozac a few years ago but it made me feel kind of wierd and I've heard so many horror stories about synthetic antidepressants so I don't know if I should try a milder kind sjw (anybody try nature's resource?) or just stay away from all psychoactive drugs. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I too had this strange experience with sjw where it at one time made me feel great and then at a later time made me feel horrible. I don't know what could cause this type of reaction but I do know that there is so much about the brain and herbs and drugs that even the experts don't understand. Can I ask you what brand of sjw you were taking? I have read that high-hyperforin brands such as HBC protocols can disagree with some people. Thanks and best of luck with your job interview!

Thanks for your reply Samantha. I certainly agree with you about the brain and its complexities - and how we have only scratched the very surface - and we meddle with it at our risk! There is so much more that is not known. The brand of SJW I am using is from a co. called Bio-Health / Pure-Fil. The capsules have 300mg of SJW - Pure powdered herb. The herb used (allegedly) complies with the BHP standards for SJW. There is no mention of hypericin or hyperforin specifically, but I reckon that would be what the BHP standard is all about? - I will look further into that. Pure powederd herb is better that anything purified I thought - don't herbs have 'synergistic' compounds? - where if the main active ingredient is removed it is not as effective as the cocktail of other compounds in the herb itself?

I will for now adjust my SJW according to how I feel and judge at the time - maybe taking more at night may be better. I took 3 capsules last night and will take none through the day and see where that leaves me. So far I feel good this morning. I am a bit wary about going 'cold-turkey' right on top of having a job interview!

Hi again,
Hope you are doing well - did you find that taking all 3 capsules at night helped you? I know that when sjw was working for me I would take my whole dose at night - when I later tried to spread the dose throughout the day (because I read that was a better way to take it) it really was not nearly as beneficial - it caused appetite at mood fluctuations in me. When I took it all at once I felt so much steadier.

I'm from the US and I don't know anything about BHP standards but if you should ever find out if your sjw is high or low in hyperforin I would be interested in knowing. I'm still hoping that a non-research-grade, less potent sjw might help me and I'm trying to work up the courage to try a new brand (I'm so sensitive to medications and worry about another adverse reaction). While I'm not severely depressed, I don't feel like I'm functioning well right now despite diet and exercise and supplementation efforts. Thanks and take care!
