Depression runs in my family and I have always been the type to never want to take any kind of pills until recently. I've been really agitated, mood swings, lack of sleep anxiety, and depression. I went ot see doctor and they put me on Zoloft. I started taking it and during the first week I felt diffrent. The only side effect was my jaw kept lokcing (rare) acccording to my doctor so she switched me to Lexapro. Thing is I'm scared to really take anything. I feel like I will have to be on it forever and then it won't work eventually. Plus I have read so many bad things about Zoloft and Lexapro and withdrawl when you try to go off. Also I don't want to gain weight. I have to work very hard just to maintain the weight I am now. So i just stopped taking it. I was thinking about the SJW but it seems that it may effect birth controll pills and I already have 3 children - any have any ideas or advice I need something, thanks

Hi there: In the past 8 years I have been on prescription anti-depressants twice, and I have also taken SJW / 5-HTP on two separate ocassions. This second time on SJW has been now for a little over two months. Although I am not 100% (maybe that's something people with this condition may never be anyway?!), I am doing definitely better. I would say just as good as with the prescription drugs. Both times the prescription meds caused some weight gain, and the first one (Effexor) also a rise in blood pressure (I was only about 32 at the time and still within "normal" weight range. So, I don't want to discourage anyone from prescription drugs, they do help and the doctor thought it was the safest to use while I was breastfeeding, but I definitely didn't like the weight issue. It's taken me about a year now to lose some of it (not that I was trying VERY hard :-)). What seems to help some people with both the depression and the weight is 5-HTP, you might want to research that too. Good luck!
