"st johns wort ?" , Tue 1 Nov 15:40

Hello my name is joan (friends call me Jo) I went to the docs a few weeks ago, to explain that i was feeling very tired and not at all myself. she ask me various questions and then told me that she thought i may be DEPRESSED i was shocked i have never felt depressed in my life. But i took the percription and said i would give it a go. i came home and typed in the long name into the internet and was horrified to find out it was prosac. I thought god she thinks i am a manic female axe murder (or on the road to it). I then began to research depression and soon realized that maybe she was right I was exspriencing quite a few of the classic syptoms. So i started taking the medication, but the very thought of "PROSAC" depressed me more. i took them for 2 weeks and just could'nt take anymore, i just couldnt get away from the old 60's manic depressive housewifes doped up on on prosac and valium, so i stoped taking them. I am now thinking of trying STW as an alternative. I would greatly appreciate any comments you may heve.

sorry if i have gone on a bit.

jo x

Hi Jo

Read your mail and thought I would tell you how I have been managing for the last 3 weeks. I was prescribed anti-depressants and like you was really bothered after I read the side effects both with the pills and on the net. Decided to try SJW and a light therapy box, I also started taking Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, echinacea. I am feeling much better - still have the odd off day but on the whole feel that I am in charge and feeling generally much better.

I have been depressed before and was prescribed Seroxat, which was really hard to come off - it took me months and I vowed never to take another anti-depressant. I am not saying that there isn't a place for anti-depressants and for some people they may be necesary, but it is worth trying the alternatives, i.e. SJW to see if it works for you. Be positive and sort out anything that gets you down mentally, reading a self help book is also good. I read "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" It has helped me. Hope the above is of some help - keep smiling and I am sure things will get better.

Hi,

I totally agree with you, Prozac has too many side effects. It happened to me to I went to see a doc and I was feeling a little anxious and he gave me an antidepressant, which made me even more anxious. I believe it was either Lexapro or Zoloft, tried it for a couple of days had major headaches, so stopped. Then later another doc prescribed Imipramine, the only major side effect that she forgot to tell me was the loss of memory and I am a student so I can't have that. So now I am on SJW and self encouragement and my religion are helping me through it all. So give it a try and hopefully this will work better than any of the anti depressants did. :)
Good Luck,
Liz
