Topic Title: Is Research Grade Better Than Cheaper Brands?
| | "Is Research Grade Better Than Cheaper Brands?" , Wed 19 Oct 16:42:
What exactly is it which makes a brand which is regarded as research grade better than cheaper brands?
Is it the production method, or some other reason?
I believe the more expensive brands such as Kira are produced using the ethanol production method.
So I e-mailed the company which produces the inexpensive brand "Valupak" to discover if they use some other method. http://www.netconnected.com/brp/CGI_Built/products/VP719.html
They informed me that they use the ethanol method to produce their Valupak SJW.
So why would Kira or Perika necessarily be any better than ValuPak, or are they simply regarded as being better because they're more expensive?

I think the main difference is that research has been based on extracts standardized for both hyperforin and hypercin. Most brands commonly available in stores are standardized for hypercin only. I have tried both and found double-standardized brands seemed significantly more effective for me, but some people on the forum seem to have had success with brands standardized only for hypercin.
From what I have read there seem to be three main research grade extracts -- Indena (used in HBC), WS 5572 (used in Perika, known as WS 5570 in Germany) and LI 160 (used in Kira). Hyperforin rapidly degrades when exposed to air and light, and both HBC and Perika are formulated to avoid that. I am not familiar with Kira, but it may have some hyperforin preservative formulation as well. These extracts may be available in other brands, and if the hyperforin content remains stable I would think those brands should be similar.
While double standardized brands do cost more, HBC and Perika are still pretty reasonably priced.
