Topic Title: SJW & Light Box update
| | "SJW & Light Box update" , Tue 18 Oct 14:08
Hi folks
Just a quick note to let you know that I am on my 5th day of the SJW and lightbox (see earlier mail). I am beginning to feel brighter and much less depressed and even managed to go into work which I couldn't have last week. My eyes were a little sore for a couple of days when I started, I am conscious that perhaps the 2 remedies are not compatible but felt so low that I decided to take the chance. So far so good. I am not expecting a miracle and I take each day at a time but I am beginning to feel human again. I am also reading a book - Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway. I would suggest it as reading matter - makes you realize that being positive also helps.
Hope this has been of some interest to some of you. I will write again in a week and keep you updated. Best wishes to you all

I think my eyes were a bit sore in the beginning too. And I got headaches. It also made me feel quite manic and happy, almost too manic. I cut back on the time I used it each morning, and things were better. I think I used it about 45 minutes the first few times, and now I get by with 20 minutes. You will find out what works best for you.

I'm glad to hear you are getting some relief from the therapies. Could you tell me why SJW and a light box might not be compatable when used together.

SJW can make you photosensitive (i.e., sensitive to light), so the light box might not be a good idea.

Not to alarm you but sheep go blind from eating SJW and staying (as they do) in the sun all day....
Can't you take cod liver oil instead of the lightbox? It's full of vitamin D, might be a better idea.

Sorry to disagree, but I think those sheep are eating massive, amounts of SJW, and not the little bit we humans are taking in our tablets. They are outdoors all day in the baking hot sun, and that's not the same as using a light box for a little bit of time. Also, the lights in a light box are not the same lights used in a tanning bed, so you don't get any kind of tan from using them. And you don't get Vit. D from using a light box. A good website to visit and learn about light box usage is sunbox.com. There was one study in 1999 that I know of that suggested the use of SJW and the use of a light box together could Perhaps cause cateracts. I haven't heard anything about this or seen any new studies since then.

Hi,
You don't get vitamin D from using a lightbox? I am sorry, I thought that was the point of it, since Vitamin D helps SAD tremendously (I should know as I have/had it from lack of sunlight!) but I suppose you know better than I do.
However if you or the original poster (can't remember now) would like some advice I would say you should start taking cod liver oil anyway as it is a great source of vitamin D3 and I think it would tremendously help you as it did me, as I have read it helps even with "normal" depression. You can get it in capsule form where you don't have to taste it....just something to try as it's best to try as many things as possible and it sure beats sitting in front of a lightbox for an hour every day!

Thanks for the info on vit. D. I do increase it every fall and throughout the winter. Perhaps not enough. I like the tablet form. The light box doesn't do a thing for vit. d, it helps with seretonin.
