Dr. Amen, the guru of SPECT scans and ADD wrote a book on depression/anxiety that came out a couple years ago and I just got around to reading it.
Wow!
All this time I had been treating my anxiety/depression with either SJW or 5-HTP, with no ultimate success. It turns out that there are some types of anxiety/depression that are antagonized by serotonin. I've come to realize that I have "unfocused anxiety/depression," which is characterized by having underactivity in the prefrontal cortex and overactivity in the limbic system (amygdala). The prefrontal cortex is what regulates or controls the activity of the amygdala and it is not activating, so the amygdala is free to cause it's misery. Therefore, my treatment needed to be something that helped arouse the prefrontal cortex and that supplement is tyrosine and DL-phenylalanine (DLPA). I've stopped taking 5-HTP or SJW and now I take tyrosine and DLPA and I'm much better. SAMe is also effective for this type.
I just wanted to point out that serotonergic type treatments are not always the best and if you have a negative reaction to these it might be a different form of depression and anxiety you're dealing with. I highly recommend reading this book. And no you won't need a SPECT scan to know what type you have. The authors clearly describe each type and it's symptoms and you can easily identify what type you are.
You can search inside the book on Amazon and get a lot of info that way:

Hi Bach, great news this site, thank you. Actually I checked on the book and got to AMEN CLINICS site. I took the test there, ``Amen Brain System Test`` and at the end of it I found very interesting information on my type of depression, what supplements for each depression etc. I actually have same kind of depression with you, so yes, I have to add same supplements. Did you feel better short time after starting them? Dania
