"Pregnancy after St. John's Wort" , Mon 22 Aug 06:36

Hello all,

I have a concern about conceiving after St. John's Wort. I took the herb for three months at a dosage of 900 mg per day. Now, it has been about a year and I cannot get pregnant despite having stopped the herb. My fears were exacerbated after reading that St. John's Wort can cause destruction of sex cells in rats. Can anyone elaborate on their experiences with St. John's Wort and conception? Has anyone conceived after taking the herb for a significant time?

Thanks kindly,
Cassie

I took SJW for about 2 years, then went off for about 5. I didn't have trouble getting pregnant, but I did take Vitex, Red Raspberry Leaf, EPO. Check out the book Taking Charge of your Fertility--it has great advice about knowing when you're fertile.

BTW, I follow The Mood Cure now and feel better with few side effects than I had on SJW, and it's safe to do while pregnant.

Good luck!

Hi Cassie:

I also took SJW for some months before having my children. It took almost a year to get pregnant for the first time. I wouldn't necessarily blame it on SJW, but rather on irregular cycles, work stress, being already in my thirties, and being an anxious person to begin with. I did, though, after doing some research, take the herb Vitex (I think it's also called chasteberry–of all things) and into my second bottle I found out that I was pregnant. When we decided to have our second child I just decided to take the Vitex right away, and it only took about two bottles again (i.e. 2 months) to get pregnant. I discontinued it right after finding out, since I wasn't sure if it's safe, especially in early pregnancy. I have seen Vitex used also in formulations to ease menopause symptoms, so it does have an effect on the hormonal system. The capsules leave a bit of a strong taste after you swallow them, and I seem to recall some heartburn.

Good luck to you!
