OMG, yes! I took ginsing in college when I was trying to get off caffeine and it made me crazy. I was a complete monster to everyone around me and had horrible violent dreams.
Try SJW on it's own (it helped me a lot years ago) or try The Mood Cure. Others on this board have mentioned 5-HTP and other amino acid supplements. I've found TMC to work 1000% better than SJW. I had lots of side effects, like neck muscle spasms and anxiety attacks on SJW.

At one time it was thought SJW might be an MAO inhibitor. MAOIs can cause a serious rise in blood pressure when mixed with some other substances, one of which is red wine. More recent research has shown that SJW has very weak, if any MAOI action, so I don't think there's a problem with having two glasses of red wine while taking SJW. I personally have had some red wine, cheeses etc., which are on the list of things you are not supposed to eat with MAO inhibitors, and have had no problem at all. I guess it's good sense to use moderation but I think it's OK to have any food or wine in reasonable quantity without being too concerned.
Ginseng is supposed to be activating and might increase anxiety. Some people notice anxiety as a side effect of SJW, others don't. It's pretty much a case of trial and error. You might search the forum for "anxiety" and see if there are some brands people with depression/anxiety have preferred.

I don't consume alcohol at all, and I also have no extended experience with it , but I have read in several places that alcohol is a depressant. SJW is an antidepressant...so it just wouldn't make any sense to take a depressant while taking an anti depressant, it could possibly counter the effects that you get from SJW. Also from what I remember alcohol is on the list of anxiety increasing substances. Do some research. As far as mixtures of SJW with other plants...I wouldn't go for that. Try taking a reputable brand instead (refer to the FAQ on Kelly's main page) Peace
