I have been taking L-Tyrosine 500mg 2x per day along with 5-HTP 100mg at night. I have read a couple of articles that say L-Tyrosine works synergistically with 5-HTP, which makes sense since Tyrosine is a precursor to Norepinephrine. Other alternative medicine books recommend D-L Phenylalanine(DLPA) for depression instead of Tyrosine, however, it doesn't make sense since DLPA is a precursor to Tyrosine. Therefore, the body has less work when given Tyrosine and more enzymes are required to convert DLPA to the final product needed for energy and to ultimatly alleviate depressive symptoms. I have been taking L-Tyrosine for aprox. 2 years and i'm not sure if it's really beneficial. I have yet to try DLPA just to see if i notice any effect at all. If anyone has tried both supplements and has any info about either, i would be curious to know. Thanks in advance!

By the way, i wanted to mention that both are indicated to relieve depression as well as reducing your appetite. I feel that both are beneficial in more than one way and are a consideration for those who are taking anti-depressant meds with side effects of weight gain and many other numerous side effects that i feel aren't worth the overall benefit as well as long term maintenance many antidepressants require. Many meds are quite expensive and if one should decide to taper off, there are extreme side effects. I am a 4th year med student and have researched many alternative therapies for depression and anxiety. Besides my own personal experience i would love to hear anyone who has additional info to add and consider. Thanks in advance
