"Question on Perika" , Thu 21 Jul 14:25

I was using Perika for about 6 month now – 3 time a day. The first four month it worked a bit. Then, I tried to lower my dose to 2 pills a day, morning and afternoon…what a difference! In three days I was feeling MUCH better and for the last two month I am myself again. However, last several days, my mood getting worse and I feel some anxiety…Question: dose anybody had the same experience and is this a way that my organism begging me to lower a dose again to 1 pill a day?

I have used Perika for about one year now and have found that at different times I need different doses.

I reduced it down to 1 pill a day for a while and it definitely improved my mood.
Then I found I was getting bad again so increased the dose back up.

I am thinking of trying another brand to see if it is more stable.
The strength of the dose may vary from batch to batch or it may just be that our brain chemisty changes and we need to adjust the dose to balance it.
Either way it is a bit of a pain but better than nothing..

Same situation here. Inconsistency all over the place, even witin a single day. I'm also taking some multivitamins, a minimal omega-3 fish oil supplement, and ginkgo biloba. I had tried varying doses of Perika and varying times of day. I was experiencing daytime fatigue, and decided to increase the ginkgo to 240 mg. per day (half in the morning, half evening). This is an allowable dosage, but twice the standard recommended 120 mg. per day, and I would not recommend this for everyone at all. When I increased the ginkgo I started re-experiencing all the side effects I had previously had with Perika. I cut back the Perika, currently one 300 mg. tablet at night, and am feeling much better -- knock on wood. This combination seems to be helping me with low level depression I'd experienced constantly, also recurring more severe depression. I attribute the improvement to the increase in ginkgo, in conjunction with Perika which has been helpful, but frustrating. My main problem with Perika has been inconsistency, and I wouldn't be surprised if I had to bump the dose down or up again. I've experienced this to a lesser extent with some prescription antidepressants, but it seems much more obvious with Perika. I'm inclined to think it's an individual reaction rather than inconsistent batches, but don't know. Have thought HBC Protocols might be an alternative, but have not tried that, and am doing reasonably well at the moment, so am hoping this continues.

I did a little research into Perika a few months back and found some really intersting info.

1. Perika uses a SJW extract called 5572. 5572 (and 5570) has actually been tested in some major SJW clinical trials with some great results. When you hear about those trials where SJW was as effective as prescription drugs, chances are that it was 5572 that was tested.

2. 5572 is manufactured by a company in Germany called Wilmar Schwabe (spelling should be close). I contacted these folks, and according to their head researcher, they use a patented standardization process that has been shown in numerous batch tests to be standardized at 5% hyperforin. The point: They aren't playing around with these claims.

Now, i didn't believe him at first, but if you look at all the signs, these guys are totally legit. Wilmar Schwabe is a mega-million dollar company in Germany and Nature's Way (Perika) is a mega-gazillion dollar company in the USA. I am pretty sure Perika would make sure that they knew what they were buying before they licensed the SJW from Schwabe.

I think these guys did their research, and I am willing to bet that you won't find a higher quality SJW product anywhere in the world.

If you are going to try a SJW single-herb preparation to help improve mood and reduce some of the symptoms of depression, I'd go with Perika. Additionally, it is about $12 a bottle, so it is well worth a try.

Perika is standardized at a minimum 3% hyperforin, .3% hypercin according to its packaging. Many people on the forum have had great success with it. My personal reaction to it -- I'm not certain why -- was inconsistent. About a week ago I switched to HBC Protocols which uses the Indena extract, standardized to minimum 4% hyperforin, .3% hypercin. HBC is working much better for me -- a lot smoother -- and at this point I feel it's a good alternative for those who find Perika destabilizing or inconsistent.
