"Xanax & St. John's Wort" , Mon 18 Jul 11:10

I have a question about combining Xanax and St. Johns Wort. I have been taking Xanax for about 2 years. My question is do I have to stop taking xanax to take St. Johns Wort. I suffer from Anxieties and depression, but I am hoping that if I take St. Johns Wort my depression will get better because xanax is really a quick fix and it works on anxiety mainly and not with depression. Can anyone please let me know. I don't know where to turn.

Thank you,
Monic

first thing's first-whatever you do, please DO NOT quit taking xanax cold turkey. I understand that you take it for medical use as opposed to recreational use, but a lot of the outcomes are the same. I overdosed on xanax very bad. when prescribed, they are given in sometimes less than 1 mg doses, and i took 19 mg at once. obviously i had quite a scare that made me realize the problem i had. i knew if i quit i would have withdrawals but i thought if i could quit cold turkey with no help, i could be really proud of myself. i quit and 2 days later, my brain freaked out because it thought it needed it... i had seizures(sp?) for a week violently before i went to the doctor broke down and explained what happened. i was forced to continue taking xanax by the doctor for 2 months, lowering my dose by just a tiny bit every few days. It is very important to work yourself off of it. The company xanax will actually give you instructions of the safest dosages and amounts for the period of time you will be coming off it... <-and i would definitely suggest it. i am not positive about taking the 2 together, just make sure you check with a doctor.

Monica,

I would refer you to the link on the left side of this page, entitled "switching meds".

I aint no expert (and have no knowledge of Xanax), but I would have thought that taking two different meds at the same time would be a bit of a no-no.
