Topic Title: Response to negative SJW article
| | "Response to negative SJW article" , Mon 4 Jul 12:01
As I was searching for info on SJW, I found this article:
http://atheism.about.com/library/glossary/paranormal/bldef_stjohnswort.htm
He says, "Studies performed at Duke University have demonstrated that with moderate to severe depression, St. John's Wort does no good at all." and "St. John's Wort can also kill you, if you aren't careful"
Is anything he's saying true? He says "The active ingredient in St. John's Wort is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)." But I've seen conflicting reports on this...
Just curious. I took my first Kira SJW today for anxiety.

I've read that article and honestly I think some of it is a load of crap. I don't see any documentation or references to anything that he says.
Particularly when he says, "St. John's Wort can kill you..." without providing any proof or evidence. Can it really kill you? Doubtful. I have never, ever heard of that for anyone, and I don't know if there's ever been a documented case of this... although with countless millions of people taking SJW, I'm sure anything is possible when you consider the unlikely chance of someone having a massive allergic reaction combined with a total disregard for drug interactions, dosages, and side-effects... even then, if it's even possible it must be extremely rare. I agree that it's a drug and people should be cautious of the drugs it interacts with. Compare that to some over-the-counter drugs, where one bottle taken all at once could be fatal. There's a big difference between hypothetical and reality for millions of people.
Second, SJW at most functions as a very mild MAOI. If consuming alcohol, aged foods like cheese, fermented sausage, dried fish, dried fruit and so on were a lethal combination with SJW, I'd be dead years ago as would many others. These are some of my favorite foods! If SJW were a real MAOI it would be a grave error to take these foods while taking the drug. That being said I wouldn't suggest anyone eat 2kg of salami, 2 bottles of red wine and a four pounds of cheese in one setting... even without SJW, you'll probably get sick!
Third, this article simply does not reflect the latest study by the British Medical Journal about St. John's Wort for more than just mild depression. I'm surprised that about.com would publish something like this, without verifying the facts.
But I'm also surprised the article shows up under the category, "Agnosticism / Atheism." What on earth does that have to do with depression, herbs or alternative medicine??!!! I think the answer is pretty clear: NOTHING!!!
