"suicidal thoughts with SJW?" , Mon 27 Jun 16:52

I am about to try SJW for the first time.. i have never really taken a AD for more then a few days because along time ago when i was 17 i was put on prozac for anxiety/panic and had these horrid thoughts of suicide which i couldnt control.. once i stopped the prozac the thoughts went away.. pretty much had the same effect with all the SSRIs they gave me.. the panic finally went away on its own after about a year..

anyway i am 28 now and suffering from mod depression.. the Dr. keeps pushing lexapro on me but i wont take it because of what happened to me on all the other SSRIs before.. so i am gonna give SJW a try but id like to know if anyone has ever had a side effect like that or heard of someone who has with SJW?

thanks!

I had suicidal thoughts and was hospitalized when I was 15 when I took Stratera. I had the same result when the doctors took me off of it...I felt a lot better (but that still wasn't saying much). I decided that one bad experience wasn't going to keep me from becoming "normal" (whatever that means) in the long run. I switched meds and am doing great. I hope that SJW works for you or you are able to find something that does work.
Best of luck and remember to tell your doc if you decide to go on SJW or any other med.

I've never heard of anyone with heightened suicidal thoughts from St. John's Wort, but please proceed with caution anyway. It sounds like you have really taken the right approach and could see that it was the SSRIs that were causing you to think that way. The fact that they went away when you stopped taking prozac is the most telling sign. I'm not sure if the doctors know why that happens, and while it's rare it does happen to a small number of people... you may be one of them. But don't worry and don't give up, there is lots of hope. Please let us know how the SJW goes for you, and if that doesn't work there are other options too including 5HTP, SAMe, L-tyrosine... and as always, these or others are great when combined with vitamin-B, good exercise, and fresh air...

Thanks for the reply..

today i took a 1/4 of one pill (Perika)
i know 1/4 of a pill is not going to do anything but it gives me a quick escape route if anything seems off.. i figure ill do 1/2 a pill for a few days starting tomorrow then try a full one and work my way up to a full dose of the 3 a day.. i know i am probably freaking out over nothing but man those SSRIs scared the crap out of me.. so i am really pill shy.

Im new to this forum...hi everyone!
Took Prozac a couple of years ago and had those terrible suicidal thoughts you mention, I stopped the pills and they stopped- I knew the thoughts were caused by the pills. What made them extremely unnerving was that I would be watching TV and think in a casual manner:
"I will kill myself after this programme"
Now I may have felt depressed but suicide is no option under any circumstances to me!!!
I was tried on other antidepressants such as seroxat which gave me nausea, finally came to take a 10mg dose of Citalopram which I could tolerate, I stayed on this for 2 years and slowly weaned myself off it, everything was fine for about 3 days. I then started to get suicidal thoughts for a couple of days and my confidence dropped, I wont be taking antidepressants again as I seem to have the effect mentioned.

chardthefish: yes! that is exactly what i am talking about.. i never had those thoughts in my mind or even thought about it until i took the prozac.. and like you they just came out at anytime.. and yes it was scary! what was nice about it though is that even though i couldnt control the thoughts.. i could still control myself and not do anything.. but the thoughts alone were enough to never make me want to try meds again..

i think they should be taken off the market or people should be watched really close when theay are on them... but they never are.. its always just "here are some pills.. go feel better" i hate that..
