Topic Title: Do I take One Per Day or Three...?
| | "Do I take One Per Day or Three...?" , Mon 23 May 05:39
It mentions the following on the "Recommended Dosage" section of this site;
"The correct dosage, according to the original study by the British Medical Journal, is three capsules of St. John's Wort extract per day, 300 mg each, standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin"
A certain brand of SJW has a herbal extract at a 3:1 ratio, which provides 1000mg equivelant of St Johns Wort - but 334mg of extract. The hypericin content is 0.3% of the extract - ie 0.3% of 334mg of extract; therefore 1mg of hypericins.
So if I wanted to take a dosage of about 1000mg (a bit more than the 900mg suggested by the BMJ), do I take one of these tablets per day, or three?

One per day. There are supposed to be fewer side effects with sjw than standard antidepressants, but I did experience side effects and was glad I had started with a 300 mg dose increasing to 900 over about a week and a half. Starting out at 1000 mg would have been too much for me. If you have adverse side effects I'd get another brand to start and work up to the full dose--would recommend starting low in any case. Some people have no problem starting at a full dose, others do.

Oh right - Thanks FMacKay!
I wasn't too sure as each tablet provides 1000mg equivelant of St Johns Wort, but with 334mg of extract. Which left me a bit confused...
In order to obtain a little bit more than the 900mg suggested by the British Medical Journal I wasn't too sure if I should therefore take one tablet ( = 1000mg of SJW), or three tablets ( = 1002mg of extract).

I just e-mailed the company which produces this brand of SJW, and they said the following in their e-mail,
"To follow BMJ guidelines you would need to take 3 St Johns Wort capsules per day to reach the 900mg of St Johns Wort extract it recommends."
So now I am really confused; looks as if it must be three capsules per day in order to meet the 900mg per day...
Anyone...?

Actually, now that I read the "Recommended Dosage" section of this site again it says;
"The correct dosage, according to the original study by the British Medical Journal, is three capsules of St. John's Wort extract per day, 300 mg each, standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin"
Put another way, that's a daily dosage three capsules of SJW standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin, each containing 300mg of SJW *extract*. Note the word "extract".
And if I read the contents of this brand of SJW again it says
"it has a herbal extract at a 3:1 ratio, which provides 1000mg equivelant of St Johns Wort - but *334mg* of *extract*. The hypericin content is 0.3% of the extract - ie 0.3% of 334mg of extract; therefore 1mg of hypericins."
So if I were to take three of these per day, I think the dosage would be 1002mg. Which is 102mg more than the 900mg suggested by the British Medical Journal.

I was also confused, and am afraid I may have given you some bad information. If each capsule contains 334 mg extract standardized to .3% hypercin you would take 3 a day as the manufacturer stated. This would be a slightly higher dose than typically recommended, but not by much. I'm afraid I added to the confusion and apologize.

Ok - no problem.
It is quite confusing they way they have it worded; "which provides 1000mg equivelant of St Johns Wort - but 334mg of extract"
Still not quite sure what they mean by "1000mg equivelant of St Johns Wort, but with 334mg of extract"
"Equivelant of St Johns Wort" doesn't appear to mean the same as "extract".
