"Beginning St. John's Wart after stopping meds" , Sat 21 May 17:58

Hi everyone- I am so glad that I came across this website while looking for stats on SJW. It is surely a good feeling to know that there are many others out there in need of something, and I am not alone with my depression. I have been on several different meds, my last on being Effexor, for the past 5 years. I have gained about 50 pounds from these meds., and even though I am going through a really rough period in my life right now, about to get divorced from a mentally abusive husband, I have made my decision that the weight has to go. (Literally and figuratively! At least I still have my sense of humor...) The doctor has helped me gradually get off the meds. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS YOURSELF. I HAVE, AND THE DETOX FROM THEM IF YOU STOP COLD TURKEY CAN MAKE YOU 100 TIMES MORE MISERABLE AND VERY SICK! I am very moody now, and am trying very hard not to take it out on my daughter, but I hope in the long run, the weight will come off, the husband will be gone, and the SJW will work. It looks like people start off with 3 caplets a day, with meals. I look forward to anyones advice and support. Good luck with you!

"I also came off Effexor" , Mon 23 May 00:48

I also came off Effexor. I didn't go through my doctor, but I came off using the method I'd been taught by my doctor when I changed meds before. I only came off them after doing considerable work on improving my thought patterns and self esteem.

I was med free from December until about two weeks ago due to several stressful occurrences triggering anxiety. I've been taking three St John's Wort a day, and drinking herbal teas (lemon myrtle, lemon balm, chamomile and jasmine) and doing pretty well.

I find it a lot more subtle than medication. It's a gentler mood enhancer.

I stopped effexor, lamictal and depakote 8 months ago. I've lost 40 lbs but do have a lot of anxiety. I go to church and read the Bible and self help books. I'm afraid of some of the silliest things. I eat very healthy and use no caffeine or alcohol. very little sugar. Trying to stay off meds. Went to this site today cause I'm tired of being so fearful. Depression is really just fear of life. You just have to tackle stuff head on. I'm trying. Wish me luck and prayers are welcome. Same to all who read.

Hi- Thank you for responding. Did you gain a lot of weight from the Effexor? Did you feel very sick as you were getting off the drug? How did you get off it? I was on 150mg for two years, then two months ago, the Dr. said to take half for two weeks straight, then for two weeks take 37.5 mg. every other day. I have been feeling like I have the flu- very ackey, VERY moody, and I just cant wait until my 4 pills that I have left are gone, so I can finally say that I am not on any "depression medicine." the next time my husband- who I am about to kick to the curb, throws it up to me that I am an "unfit mother because I take antidepressents." Please tell me your story. Thanks
