"Public misunderstanding of depression is widespread. A recent survey of the general population revealed that :
71% thought that mental illnesses were due to emotional weakness; 65% thought it was caused by bad parenting; 45% thought it was the victim's fault and they could will it away, 43% thought mental illness was incurable; 33% thought it was the consequent of sinful behavior; and only 10% thought it had a biological basis or involved the brain."
I heard someone estimate that 10% or even more of the population takes some type of psyche med. It seems that most of these people are embarassed or even ashamed about this and they don't like to talk about these things. I do not understand this. Why are people like this. Why do people have such a misunderstanding and negative view of mental illness and depression.
