"good initial response, stopped working" , Sat 7 May 17:21

I have had a long standing problem with depression characterized by low energy, early morning wakening/insomnia, weight problems, much worse moods - frequently suicidal - in the morning than evening. I have taken a wide variety of antidepressants. Effexor helped for a short time, then quit working. Had a very good response to St. John's Wort at a low dose, then it quit working, even increasing the dose. Depression is destroying my life. Has anyone with similar symptoms found anything that worked?

You are simply out of serotonin. SSRI's eventually cause your stores of serotonin to deplete so much so that you don't have enough to function. SJW is not going to work if there is not enough neurtransmitters. You need to replenish your supply.

Read this about neurotransmitters and SSRI's:

Awwe hun :( It hard to find something that works. Some things work for some and yet doesn't work for another. I was on effexor and it worked but the side effects were horrible! Plus I'm in Canada and the doctors don't watch their patients closely enough.. when someone is on such medications the dr should be calling to make sure you see them regularly. When you're depressed or on a drug that changes your behavior you don't always go to your appointments. I think maybe going to see a psychologist/psychiatrist might be a good place to start. I forget which of the 2 prescribe drugs(psychiatrist I think) it's expensive but they don't just sit there and listen to your questions.. they actually train you to think a certain a way(cognative therapy) by asking certain questions at certain times or something. Anyway Seeing one and being on a drug therapy is the best way to go if you're in a really bad place. I'm not in a really bad place.. just looking to improve my mood as I have my own issues:) I really hate antidepressants but if I ever thought I needed them again I supose I'd have no choice. There's nothing worse then feeling so down all the time.

Thanks for your responses. I've been to several doctors, psychiatrists and psychologists over the past nineteen years. Positive effects of any medication have been temporary, and there have nearly always been adverse side effects.

I have not had medical insurance for some time and can no longer afford the psychiatric medication guessing game. There seem to be no firm ways of sorting ranges of symptoms into categories which might be more or less responsive to one medication or another. It is a seemingly endless experiment, the only sure result of which is the diminshing of one's funds, any positive medical effect luck.

St. John's Wort has had as much of a positive effect as the best of the medical profession's prescriptions, for me. For now I am going to try starting from square one with a low dose of SJW taken in the evening as opposed to morning and work from there. This disease takes a huge toll on society as well as the individual. It is difficult to live a life of not living up to one's potential.

I notice several other people who have posted have mentioned faith plays an important role in their ability to deal with their situation. I totally concur.
