"Refreshing sleep, dreams, and St. John's Wort" , Thu 5 May 20:27

For the past 2 or 3 years I have taken 5-htp daily with mostly successful results. The 50mg I took a few hours before bed every night usually made my sleep much deeper and refreshing with alot of vivid dreams, and then I would wake up feeling very refreshed and with plenty of energy to do things during the day.

My symptoms of 'depression' have always been the poor, unrefreshing sleep, extreme difficulty getting up in the mornings especially on a consistant basis, "brain fog", tiredness/fatigue, difficulty concentrating, low motivation, poor energy etc. 5-htp, for the most part, seemed to rememdy all these problems.

However for the past year or so it seems that 5-htp might not be working as well as it used to, and I'm now getting desperate to do something to feel better. I really would not like to go on
prescription antidepressants again if possible. So now I am going to give St. John's Wort a try. Today is my fourth day of taking Spring Valley (Wal-Mart) brand St. John's Wort. I havent really felt much of anything yet. I would like to know what experience people have had with this brand. And also the effect on sleep quality that St. John's Wort has had on you in general. Also, I would like to know if anyone here has taken an antidepressant (prescription or natural), that had a good effect for a while, but then it wore off or stopped working, but then you switched to a different antidepressant and you felt better again?

Hi Jeremy-

In case you hadn't heard, I wanted to let you know that SJW and 5-HTP work together very well for some people (myself included), better than either one alone. Personally I take a full dose of SJW spread through the day, and about an hour before bed I take 25 mg of 5-HTP (from Natrol, in my case). Personally I only use 25 mg of 5-HTP (half a capsule), because a full capsule overloads me and has the opposite effect, keeping me awake.

Since 5-HTP and SJW both effect serotonin (among other things), you, too, may (or may not) find you need a lower dose of 5-HTP compared to when taking 5-HTP alone.

Anyway, I didn't want you to think you necessarily had to make a choice between only 5-HTP *or* SJW.

Best wishes.
