Topic Title: success with L-glutamine???
| | "success with L-glutamine for GAD???" , Sat 30 Apr 09:56:
Has anyone had success in treating panic attackes or GAD with L-glutamine? I think I might be GABA deficient but Xanax seems to strong and it makes me more depressed. I've tried Theanine, Gaba, Kava, 5-htp, scullkap, and none seem to help all that much. Was hoping maybe this would be the key because it more easily passes the blood brain barrier than GABA itself. Also I have brain fog. Thanks for the input.

I will reply to myself. Good news. I took L-Glutamine today (with nothing else) and am actually feeling calm for the first time in a while. There is a calmness without that drugged foggy dumb feeling I get from Xanax. I feel more with it cognitively too and I am actually quite chatty as I had coffee with friends tonite and felt more sociable than usual. (coffee isn't my friend though and has made me a little jumpy). Also, normally I am like "uuuuhhhhh, what was I going to say". But not tonight- I didn't have to strain my brain to think. I hope this may be a long term solution with no burn out. I hope it's not a placebo effect. I'll keep ya'll posted.

In case anyone is interested, the L-glutamine was not as helpful today. I felt less anxious than usual but still could feel my heavy heart beat. One good result was that my behavior was better in that I did not react in the same negative ways that I usually do to my boyfriend. He does things just to get a rise out of me but today the anxiety did not push me to feed into his insanity. I let his comments roll off my sleeve.

Hey, I'm really interested in how this works out for you. L-glutamine, how does that act neurochemically? What neurotransmitters is it related to?
I've been reading up, and I think my problem might lie with GABA defficiency. It makes sense to me that Xanax calmed you but made you more depressed. Xanax is a benzodiazephrine and is therefore very similar to alcohol (a depressant) in the way it affects the CNS. I've read that alcohol has the folowing modes of action: - inhibit serotonin from passing through the walls of blood vessels, or something, but noticably lowers serotonin levels. - increases dopamine and norepinephrine turnover rates, but may deplete levels of these chemicals (you'll have fewer stores the next day) - increase GABA activity - decrease Acetylcholine activity - release beta-endophins (in the hippocamus?), the pleasure producing or pain-relieving chemicals
I'm looking for a way to increase my GABA [activity]. How are GABA supplements, have they any efficacy? What are chemical precursors to GABA (e.g. analagous of 5-HTP to serotonin)?
Good luck with your situation, mine is similar, so good luck to the both of us.
